Far from constituting a natural adaptation on the Iranian Plateau, nomadism is a comparatively late introduction, which can only be understood within the context of certain political circumstances. Since the early Holocene, most, if not all, agricultural communities in Iran had kept herds of sheep and goat, but the communities themselves were sedentary: only a few of their members were required to move with the herds seasonally. Though the arrival of Iranian speaking groups, attested in written sources beginning in the time of Herodutus, began to change the demography of the plateau, it wasn't until later in the eleventh century that an influx of Turkic speaking Oghuz nomadic groups--"true" nomads of the steppe--began the modification of the demography of the Iranian Plateau that accelerated with the Mongol conquest. The massive, unprecedented violence of this invasion effected the widespread distribution of largely Turkic-speaking nomadic groups across Iran. Thus, what has been interpreted in the past as an enduring pattern of nomadic land use is, by archaeological standards, very recent. Iran's demographic profile since the eleventh century AD, and more particularly in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, has been used by some scholars as a proxy for ancient social organization. Nomadism in Iran argues that this modernist perspective distorts the historical reality of the land. Assembling a wealth of material in several languages and disciplines, Nomadism in Iran will be invaluable to archaeologists, anthropologists, and historians of the Middle East and Central Asia.

Trotsky's writings through the filter of Pathfinder

"Fascism, what it is and how to fight it" is presented as a work by Leon Trotsky, but is in fact an assemblage of excerpts from various of Trotsky's writings, collected and ordered by Sara Lobman and printed by the Pathfinder Press. The original source for each passage is cited in a footnote. Other footnotes, apparently written by Ms. Lobman to make Trotsky's references more familiar, give historically useful facts such as "The Jacobins were the revolutionary petty-bourgeois forces in the French Revolution of 1789." As a short introduction to Trotsky's thought, it can serve its purpose provided one is already versed in Marxist rhetoric.

A brief account of what fascism is, where it comes from, and what to do about it

A brief collection of some of Trotsky's important letters and articles regarding fascism, this pamphlet offers a brief introduction to the nature of fascism, the conditions that give rise to it, and the strategy of resisting it through a "united front." Based on his observations of the growth of National Socialism (i.e. fascism) in Italy, Germany, Spain, and France, Trotsky concludes that fascism is a mass movement based primarily in petite bourgeoisie and backed by the big capitalist powers. Trotsky identifies a twofold set of conditions that allowed fascism to take hold in Europe: 1) the disorientation and desperation (primarily among the petite bourgeoisie) brought on by the abrupt end of capitalism's growth phase and 2) the absence or failure of a genuinely revolutionary workers' party that offers both the proletariat and the petite bourgeoisie the hope of escape from the grasp of the bourgeoisie. Accordingly, Trotsky assigns a fair proportion of the blame for the rise of fascism in Europe to the leaders of the Communist parties, the Comintern, and the leaders of the social democratic parties who betrayed the workers' revolutions in Germany, France, Spain, and Italy. Trotsky links fascism to the reactionary backlash that followed these aborted revolutions, and counterpoises against the notion of the Communist Party as a form of revolutionary hope the notion of fascism, as a mass movement, as a form of revolutionary despair.

In light of the social foundation upon which fascism rests, Trotsky emphasizes the need for a united front led by a revolutionary proletarian party (as the vanguard of the proletarian class) against fascism. In order for the proletariat to inspire confidence among the petite bourgeoisie, however, the revolutionary movement must first possess confidence in itself. This means that the party must be lead by genuine revolutionaries from the working class who possess the commitment and the strategic capacity to build on and encourage the workers' revolutionary initiative. Trotsky also points up the need for solidarity and for the workers to defend themselves against violence from the fascist. Given the level of violence that workers face, he proposes the development of workers' militias and then systematically dismantles the most common oppositions offered to such a proposal. The final sections of the pamphlet discuss the situation in the United States at the time, and Trotsky warns that the same conditions that gave rise to fascism in Europe have already appeared in nascent form in the US. While his prediction of the length of time that the "war economy" could be used to forestall the radicalization of the working classes proved overly optimistic (Trotsky predicted that this delay could not be of "long duration," whereas the capitalist powers in the US have managed to maintain the military economy since the build-up to World War 2), the severe crisis which capitalism has recently entered into, coupled with the rise of the "Tea Party Patriots," the mainstream media's glorification of "Minutemen" vigilante mobs along the US-Mexican border, the vitriolic backlash against even the slightest measures to alleviate the poverty of the working class, the growth of Christian fundamentalism and the demonization of Muslims, and the absence of an independent workers' party, let alone a revolutionary party, all combine to create conditions similar to those described by Trotsky as the grounds from which a fascist movement grows. As Trotsky observes, the most effective way to counter these trends is to build the revolutionary party.

A terrific buy

I'm an 1800 rated player. This book may sound, from the title, like just another book of puzzles, but it's nothing like that. It's a genuine organized tactics course, with good explanations of each position. The positions are grouped by theme so that after a few pages in each theme you are really learning what to look for. You can tell a lot of work has gone into the excellent selections and the clear comments on each position. The chapters are headed: Rook, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Pawn, Two Rooks, Rook & Bishop, Rook & Knight, Two Bishops, Two Knights, Bishop and Knight, Queen and Bishop, Queen and Knight, and Three Pieces.
I own several hundred chess books, and have enjoyed them all, but I don't hesitate to say that this is one of the best in my library, which is why I'm taking the time to recommend it. Considering that this book is selling for under $15, it's truly a steal. But it's a great book regardless of price. If you want to improve at chess, get this book. You'll be impressed.

Tal's Winning Chess Combinations 2nd. Edition

When I got my copy of "1000 Checkmate Combinations," I started thumbing through it and found the book had a very familiar feel to it. I confirmed my suspicion by comparing this book with a copy of "Tal's Winning Chess Combinations." Both books are very similar. Whereas "Tal's Winning Chess Combinations" uses descriptive notation and 1000 Checkmate Combinations uses algebraic notation, "1000 Checkmate Combinations" has a few more extra examples in each chapter than "Tal's Winning Chess Combinations" and a few chapters have been moved around. The examples are all very lucid and clear. Many of us have wondered when someone was ever going to re-publish "Tal's Winning Chess Combinations." It looks like Batsford did just that! If anyone wants a real good book on Chess combinations or has thought about forking out about $90+ to buy a rare copy of "Tal's Winning Chess Combinations," buy this book instead and save yourself about $60+. If you buy this book, what you'll get is a second edition of "Tal's Winning Chess Combinations" in FAN retitled "1000 Checkmate Combinations."

More than the Average Puzzle Book

I like the way that the topics are organized and the introduction to each chapter.
The book is organized by piece or piece combination themes instead of the more traditional pin,double attack etc.
Each chapter has an introduction(words and diagrams)describing the tactical properties of each piece or piece combination. Afetr the introduction you find some positions as examples, followed by the solution. At the end of each chapter is your turn to work on solving some positions. The number of positions for you to solve is different in each chapter (from 20 to 40).
You will find a mix of positions from games and studies. Practical player will benefit from the studies (calculation skills) and players reading the book for fun will enjoy the beauty of the positions (and solutions of course).

Eventually, Pat begins his own family and goals in life guided by the principles that made him the decent, caring, smart businessman that he became. From his wife, sadly with him too short a time, to his children, of whom he is so proud, to raising them as a single father after the too early death of his wife, to his national and international business expansion, Pat did it his way.

Great reading

I never read books but I made the exception. I couldn't put it down, I read the whole book in one night, then I read it again. A true gentleman. And a pioneer in life.just goes to show you if you work hard and be true to your family and friends you will be rewarded in longevity and see your dreams forfilled, I highly recommend this book. Not just because he's my boss.

I hate Bryon Douglas.

The first time I read this book I was 13 and I loved it. I couldn't relate and it angered the hell out of me but u loved it anyway. I read it again at 15 and I got a new feeling because I understood what it was like to lose friends and now I'm a senior and about to go off to college and I'm more pissed than the first time I read it and I just can't believe how things turn out. I hate bryon Douglas and I will hate bryon Douglas for the rest of my life to grow apart from your friends is one thing but friends don't turn on friends. I hate him and everything does and everything he stands for and I hate how he tries to justify his actions. I hate him.

A Powerful and Compelling Coming of Age Story

"That was Then, This is Now" centers around the lives of four adolescents. There is the narrator, Byron Douglas, a handsome charming but ultimately selfish and self-absorbed teenager. There is Mark, whom Byron's mother adopted for her own and who is Byron's best friend. Mark's penchant for mischief is too often offset by his winning smile, and he maintains a fierce loyalty to his friends. The two minor but equally important characters are Cathy, a precocious young woman who falls in love with Byron, and her younger brother M&M, a sensitive and soulful hippie wannabe.

The book moves in different actions so that it seems we're reading two novels about two brothers and best friends. In the first novel, Mark and Byron are always by each other's side, and together they witness the fearsome murder of their good friend Charlie, which scars both. In the second novel, there's a love triangle -- Byron has fallen deeply in love with Cathy, and Mark feels abandoned. The novel comes to a climax when Byron commits an act that will forever severe his relationship with both Mark and Cathy.

Like in "The Outsiders", SE Hinton has a gift for understanding and speaking the language of troubled adolescent boys, making us think she is in fact one herself. And the writing is pristine and polished, as always. But the characters are far less compelling than the ones we were entranced by in "The Outsiders," and the plot far more fragile and broken.

Still, many a teenager will find "That was Then, This is Now" speaks to them in the most haunting manner possible.

Good service.

This was very good quality service. After I finished the book, I wanted to hurl it across the room (in a good way, you know how us book lovers are, very passionate) and scream. But, I couldn't, because I was in class. This story was very, very good. One of my favorites by S.E. Hinton. I would recommend it to fans of The Outsiders, or any of her other books really. Along with that, anyone who enjoys Realistic-Fiction, and coming of age type stories.
