After a tongue thrashing from his doctor, Richard Sifkitz turns his addiction to fatty foods into an addiction to a fantasy world created around his stationary bike, spending hours a day pedaling away. But as his obsession grows, the lines between fantasy and reality dim and he believes someone or something is trailing him on his path. Ron McLarty, who previously recorded King's Salem's Lot and Faithful, delivers this novella with an excellent pace and easy disposition. His controlled reading creates a much tenser atmosphere with surprises and plot twists made more shocking without the advance warnings of a more dramatic reading. The jazzy segues between chapters lightens the tone just enough to make the listener feel uncertain about where King is taking this story. King's writing style is quite agreeable to the audio format, making for an enjoyable although slightly dark tale. This novella was published in the anthology Borderlands 5(Reviews, Jan. 19, 2004). About the Author
Stephen King is the author of more than fifty books, all of them worldwide bestsellers. Not much here

The middle aged hero of this story has gotten fat after the death of his wife and his cholestorol has gone sky high so he goes on a crash diet and buys a stationary bike. Being an artist he draws a picture of a lovely country road to a tiny town in upsatate New York on his wall. After a few weeks things get weird and our hero finds that while he's losing that flab he's also traveling on the road for real and somehow he's angered the workmen--- the guys, real guys somehow who maintain the road which is really his own body.

This is dreary cauationary tale for fat guys has too much cursing, too much product placement and there's only one good scary moment: the scene in Carlos's garage. Other than that one scene I did not care about the hero or what was waiting for him at the end of the road.

I don't want to say that the King is dead but maybe he's under a spell, or stunned or sleeping or something because this story just didn't take off. I'm not saying that I want King to write like he did in Carrie or Salem's Lot because that is impossible but I do wish he could get his literary groove back. Stationary Bike was just lackluster and wouldn't even scare a nervous two year old.

Solid storytelling. I have to disagree with those that didn't like (better yet, love) this short story. Stephen King is at his best here. For those who loved, The Long Walk, I think this story is a sure-win to entertain. It kept my attention and made me feel like I was actually riding on Richard Sifkitz kick-pegs. Do it again, Stevie!

Unruly Cooking Utensils

Problem:

“My cooking utensils always seem to be in a disorganized jumble in my kitchen drawers.”

Solution:

Cooking utensils must have their own home, all to themselves, somewhere convenient to both the sink and stove. Start your organizing project by evicting any intruders (rubber bands, pens, etc.) from your cooking utensils’ current home. Next, go through your utensils and eliminate duplicates, rarely-to-never-used items, and impulse purchases. How many wooden spoons do you really need? (Answer: one. I know it might be dirty when you need to use it, but don’t you have a sink?) Do you need all of those old, chewed-up spatulas? Are you likely to use that candy thermometer again?

Now that you have pared down your possessions, consider storing your utensils in something other than a drawer. Too many utensils in a drawer fit awkwardly, bunching up and rattling, so the drawer itself is difficult to open because the ladle is having relations with the potato masher. Store them instead in a carousel or large “canister” (glass, ceramic, or metal) so that you can see everything you have without having to open a drawer. It is also more efficient to drop clean cooking utensils in a carousel or canister than to wrestle with a stuck drawer. If you decide to use a canister, put your most often-used items in the canister and leave the lesser-used items in the now roomy drawer.

I can DO this! It's a miracle...

I have ADHD and have been rather hopelessly disorganized all my life despite the dozen or so books I have bought (and read) on the subject. This book has quite literally changed my life. I understand it, and Mrs. Pinsky understands ME. I now understand why the other books weren't effective for me, and why a few things I had tried (over-the-door hooks) worked amazingly well.

This is not one of those books where you are supposed to spend a ton of money on organizing doo-dads to make all your stuff fit better; the first thing she recommends is that you throw a lot of it away. A whole lot of it. It is much easier to organize your stuff if there isn't much of it. Why didn't I think of that? The organizing tools she recommends are a hammer and nails and inexpensive bins you can buy nearly anywhere.

The advice is brilliant- and you have probably never heard this advice before either- I certainly hadn't. I nearly cried with joy when I read the advice about the socks. My non-ADD mom has never understood my loathing of sock sorting and laundry in general. I modified the advice to fit our situation of course- oldest son has crew socks and batman underwear, youngest son has taller socks and ironman underwear. Sounds simple but it has made laundry sorting much more bearable at my house.

The advice about the paperwork basket- can I tell you how brilliant this is? Not only do I have a clean desk because I am not afraid to trash the one important thing in the avalanche of papers my kids come home from school with; when I DO realize if have trashed something in error (like this morning) I can get it back. Ingenious- or actually common sense. Why didn't I think of this??

I fortunately found this book when we were in the planning stages of building a house- I actually altered a few things in the house plan to accomodate the ideas in this book. I also threw out an unbelievable amount of stuff. Truckloads. I know the ladies at the local thrift store by name thanks to the nearly daily trips I made donating stuff. Moving day was a much more pleasant experience after throwing out probably a third of the things we own- things we didn't even need.

And guess what? I can find all of my stuff. It all fits in the drawers and cabinets- In fact, I have EMPTY drawers and cabinets. It is a piece of cake to put my things away. I no longer buy things that I think I might be out of, I know exactly what I am out of because I can see it all. I even shop differently now. After throwing out so much stuff, I am much more careful about what I do buy- I consider whether I need the item or whether it will just become clutter and need to be tossed the next time I purge.

Was it hard? Sort of. It was sometimes hard to throw away expensive items that I just didn't want or need, but after I got past the guilt it was a actually fun! I now know that I can find everything in my kitchen, the lid to every tupperware container, and every single item in my closet fits and looks great- how awesome is that?

Someone came to see my new house the other day and said "wow- you are so organized!" For a minute I thought they were being ironic, because no one had EVER said anything like that to me before- but my house actually IS organized now! I find myself losing things less frequently, and when I do lose them, finding them more quickly because there aren't random piles of stuff everywhere with no home. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Ms. Pinsky for writing this book! I do think this book would be helpful for people without ADD, and everyone with kids, but for many people with ADD, this will be nothing short of a miracle. It is NOT much different from the 2006 book though, so if you already have that one no need to re-buy.

The ONLY useful book for ADHDers on paperwork & office organization

I'm not a big book reviewer, but this was one that I needed to comment on...

Theory is nice, but I'm tired of wasting my time reading literally dozens of books over the past 15 months that explain why I'm like I am (I have ADHD) but that don't provide practical, actionable things that I can do to get around my ADHD roadblocks.

This one of the two books that I keep referring back to (the other is Your Life Can Be Better, using strategies for ADD/ADHD by Douglas Puryear--just one tip in Puryear's book has saved me about 100 hours this year). And, as I said, Pinsky's is the ONLY useful book I've read about how to handle paperwork & office organization, which is the bane of my existence. For a year I went with an intermediate version of her "filing" strategy and put my paperwork in monthly folders. I was just afraid that I'd lose something, as I always had in the past. I've since gone with the basket strategy, and it's working just fine. Try it--come over to the Dark Side...you'll never go back to (not) filing/stacking your papers everywhere because you are loathe to file them, again!

No, the author doesn't have ADHD, but she totally gets us. I've implemented many of her suggestions, and I keep referring back to the book and implementing more. It's almost too much to digest at once. (Puryear's book is like that, too.)

Yes, she tells us to toss a lot of crap, but when you think about it, we really need to anyhow. Purging really helps with clutter, distractions & the stress caused by all of our "stuff."

She has some of the most useful tips for those of us suffering from ADD/ADHD that I've read. I can't say enough good things about this book.

Not worth it.

I never write reviews on Amazon, but this book warrants one. I was very excited about finding some organizational helps to combat the messes that accompany my ADD. What I found in this, however, is a book that can be summed up in one sentence...

THROW ALMOST EVERYTHING AWAY SO THAT YOU ONLY HAVE A COUPLE PANS IN YOUR KITCHEN, ENOUGH CLOTHES FOR ONE WEEK, AND NO CDs, DVDs, OR OTHER ENTERTAINMENT DEVICES.

I am sorely disappointed. While I think the author means well, she does not have ADHD herself, and I don't think she understands the creative aspect of some of the people with it. Her experience is based on her daughter, and, while I have no doubt that her methods worked very well with her daughter and with some others who need extreme simplicity in order to function, I don't think her suggestions are reasonable for those of us who want to live a full life, including creative endeavors and activities, and want ideas that will help us actually organize, instead of eliminate, those aspects of our lives.

My suggestion is to skip this book unless you simply cannot handle having many possessions of any kind. In which case, she will certainly talk you through purging just about everything.

A uniquely valuable resource

This is a fairy unique book on structural and stress analysis. It provides key equations but doesn't typically provide their derivations. Instead, the emphasis is on developing a good conceptual understanding of the equations and structural behavior in general. This aim is fostered by summaries of key points within the chapters, and excellent sets of conceptual questions and mini-tests at the ends of the chapters. This type of conceptual understanding is vital for practicing structural engineers, yet most structural engineers lack it, so this book helps to fill a serious gap. For the same reason, I've bought a copy of this book for all of the structural engineers in my engineering firm, and we'll be using it as a resource for our in-house continuing education program.

All of this said, I do need to note that this book doesn't cover all of the key topics in structural and stress analysis. Specifically, among the topics largely or entirely missing are analysis of frames and arches, analysis of plates and shells, inelastic analysis, and structural dynamics. Nevertheless, the book still covers plenty of important topics, including some fairly advanced topics (eg, complex stresses and theories of elastic failure), so I highly recommend it.

Mohamedou Slahi was born in Mauritania in 1970. He has been detained at the U.S. prison at Guantánamo Bay since 2002. In 2010, a federal judge ordered him released--a decision the government appealed. The U.S. government has never charged him with a crime. He remains imprisoned in Guantánamo.

The human face of Guantanamo and American torture

This book is an incredible, first-person story about imprisonment, torture, and life in the secret world of Guantanamo. It is complete with government redaction bars as well as footnotes tying the narrative to declassified documents. Especially interesting are the human relationships formed with guards and interrogators throughout Slahi’s ordeal. Sadly, this tale illustrates the plight of many other Gitmo prisoners.

A little of Slahi’s story: he’s from Mauritania and when he was 18 went to college in Germany on a scholarship. In the early 1990s, he interrupted his studies to fight with al-Qaeda units against the communist government in Afghanistan (the U.S. supported anti-communist forces). He returned to Germany a few years later and got his degree. In November 2001 he went to his local police station in Mauritania to answer questions about suspected involvement in a terrorist plot – he’s been a prisoner ever since but never charged with a crime. He was rendered by the CIA to Jordan and Afghanistan for more interrogation before being sent to Guantanamo in 2002.

Slahi was one of two so-called “Special Projects” whose treatment Donald Rumsfeld personally approved – treatment that included extreme isolation, sleep deprivation, sexual molestation, frigid rooms, stress positions, and death threats against both Slahi and his mother. Military prosecutors have said that they declined to prosecute him because he was tortured or because they could simply not find anything to charge him with.

In 2010, a federal district court judge ordered him released, but the Obama administration successfully appealed and the case was sent back to the district court with instructions to use looser standards to decide whether someone can be held. And so Slahi remains locked up indefinitely, 13 years and counting -- for doing NOTHING.

The paranoia which produced the absurd redactions is only surpassed by the national paranoia which allows this level of inhumanity to flourish. MOS expresses a compassion which is astounding, and absent in his captors.

A good Muslim in our grip.

If you are interested in what can happen to a "good Muslim" caught up in the web of US war against terrorism in its early excesses, this is the account you want to read. Mr. Slahi's story is gripping, His description of the various methods of torture he endured is enough to cause spasms in your own back and abdomen as you read. I came away feeling that there has be much hidden from the public regarding the inhumane treatment those incarcerated in the years following 9/11. The only down side to this "diary" is the extreme amount of redaction found throughout the text. If you happened to catch the 60 Minutes piece several weeks ago, this text really fills out the story. Amazing that this gentle man does not direct intense hatred toward the American people in general.

An interesting read!

Through a series of synchronous events I was led to participate in a class at Mt Shasta. I decided I had better read up on what it was all about. This book did not disappoint me and I will now go to Mt Shasta with a better understanding of the energies and the people who live beneath the Mount. Lots of food for thought!

Excellent book to read while working on ascension!

This is an excellent book to spiritually connect with the residents of Telos with. As you read you will begin to visualize our future in 5D and it will assist in raising your vibration of love and help bring about Earth's as well as our ascension at a faster rate. Great stuff!
