The book's genesis and publication could hardly have been swifter. Its writing took four days from the 1st to the 4th June 1940: it was published on the 5th July. It is an angry book, indeed, a devastatingly effective polemic. Its target was the appeasers of the 1930s, the leading culprits being Baldwin, Chamberlain and Halifax who had left the country so ill-prepared, and who, by their pusillanimity, had emboldened Hitler and Mussolini; and in the case of the last two still favoured some accommodation with the fascist dictators. In today's parlance, it would be called a wake-up call. It was very successful selling about 200,000 copies.

Kenneth Morgan, Michael Foot's biographer, describes the book as consisting of 'a series of brief vignettes of key episodes or personalities, the latter invariably foolish or dishonest.' Michael Foot wrote eight of the chapters, the first and most powerful one being on Dunkirk.

Although Michael Foot was the main contributor, and the one who suggested 'Cato' as the umbrella pseudonym, the other two, as Michael Foot would be the first to admit, Peter Howard and Frank Own should not be forgotten.

Seventy years on, Guilty Men has not lost its readability and power to enrage.

When the pen can be sharper than the sword.

Written in the white heat of anger by three left of centre political journalists and rushed into publication just as Churchill became Prime Minister of a shattered nation staring down the barrel of almost certain defeat by Nazi Germany, "Guilty Men" remains one of the freshest and powerful denunciations of political arrogance and negligence ever written. The swords of WWII are rusty and forgotten, but this work of the pen endures. It is polemic of the highest kind - focused, informed and brutal in its judgement, marshalling fact and rhetoric to devastating effect. For any student of politics or history, this little book is a must read not just as a devastating critique of appeasement, but more importantly as a reminder of what responsibilities the elected leaders of any democracy bear and how easily they can delude themselves and their followers in the pursuit of the soft options. Vigilance must be eternal.

My New Go-To Manual for all Things Social Entrepreneurship

Okay, so I tend to be pretty picky about these kinds of books (nonfiction, business, how-to); there's just so much "noise" in this space that it can be difficult to find high quality material, but this book is officially my go-to reference for when people ask me questions about social entrepreneurship. The author outlines the various aspects of organizing a social enterprise (what it is, legal/incorporation issues, fundraising, measuring impact, intrapreneurship) as well as the more personal-oriented aspects of social entrepreneurship (taking the entrepreneurship leap, building a career in this space, consumer habits, etc.). It covers all the major areas and gives plenty of real-world examples.

It's also written from the perspective of three rising entrepreneurs, so it's a bit more interesting than just reading your usual dry, how-to manual––and it's well-organized, so if there are only a few topics that the reader is interested in, it's easy to skim through the table of contents and find the location in the book of those topics only. Lastly, the author also makes it relevant to all sorts of people (business owners/founders, students, professors, people interesting in creating social enterprises within existing organizations) and all sorts of business (nonprofit, for profit, small, large, etc.), which makes it relatable/accessible regardless of whether you're a die-hard social entrepreneur, just getting your feet wet in this work, or merely exploring.

Great Introduction to the Social Impact Scene

As the reader quickly finds out, social entrepreneurship is a vast topic. I really can appreciate how the author is able to keep it from being “drinking from a firehose” and presenting the material in a self-contained manageable volume. What makes this possible is a great format in following three very interesting characters looking to start a social enterprise. The book, which starts out as a story, extends beyond that by dropping in tons of knowledge with qualified sources, and ends up a very credible reference. You can tell a lot of research went into it especially in the areas of legal structure, fundraising, and the global scene for social impact. I think this is a great introduction and provides the framework for anyone wanting to enter the space.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book as a curious reader who hopes one day to enter the social impact scene. Additionally, as a relatively newer topic in entrepreneurship, there doesn't seem to be much material available to help guide, making this book all the more necessary and valued. This would be a great addition to Business school curriculum.

This is a FANTASTIC guide to the world of social entrepreneurship. When I first read the example Parekh structures the book around (getting healthy, affordable food to low-income people living in "food deserts"), I thought: 'In the absence of a billionaire investor bankrolling the project, how would you even go about doing that?!' Now I know! She provides a step-by-step narrative--complete with trial and error--showing one real-world way that it could be done. That's my favorite thing about this book: It offers practical, down-to-earth advice you can really use. If you're thinking about social entrepreneurship, do yourself a favor and read this book and keep it as a reference. It's jam-packed with everything you need to know--and it's incredibly inspiring, as well!

David Bird is recognised as the world's leading humorous bridge writer. He is also a bridge player of distinction and is the bridge correspondent for the MAIL ON SUNDAY, the EVENING STANDARD and the GLASGOW TIMES. Contributor to many of the world's bridge magazines and author of more than 110 bridge books,�he lives in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire. Ron Klinger is a leading international bridge teacher and has represented Australia in world championships since 1976. An Australian Grand Master and a World Bridge Federation International Master, he has written over 60 books, some of which have been translated into Bulgarian, Chinese, Danish, French, Hebrew, Icelandic and Polish. He lives in NSW, Australia.

Good hands, funny narrative, what else do you want?

David bird has now become a major brand name in the world of Bridge humour for his "Monks of St.Titus" books about the Bridge playing Abbot and his charges. The publishers want to capitalise on this brand by extending it in the same field. So, when it was decided that Ron Klinger's series of "Jewish humour" bridge magazine articles should be issued in book format, the publishers wanted to get the Bird brand on the cover.
David Bird set to work with Ron Klinger to expand the articles for book format and this is the result. If you are a fan of the Abbot, you will find this book very appealing. It is much better than the "Robin Hood" and "Cruise Liner" books.
The hands are, presumably, the work of Ron Klinger and they are good indeed. They are substantially better than the ones in David Bird's "Robin Hood" books. Good as they are, they are not free from errors. For example, in one case, a player holding a singleton trump is described as leading a second round of trumps.
The humour is straight, down the line Jewish and indeed, you might almost expect to find Maureen Lipman turning up to play at the Synagogue pairs. It is funny and it adds enough levity to keep the readers interest even as some of the trickiest hands are described.
Once you have read all of the Abbot books, you will certainly want to read this.
