Mark Briggs is the author of "Journalism 2.0" and "Entrepreneurial Journalism" and maintains a widely read blog at www.journalism20.com/blog. He is a frequent speaker and presenter at journalism, media and technology conferences throughout the United States and overseas. He is currently the director of digital media at KING-TV in Seattle, and he previously served as assistant managing editor for Interactive News at The News Tribune in Tacoma, Wash., and as new-media director at The Herald in Everett, Wash. He earned journalism degrees from Gonzaga University and the University of North Carolina and was an adjunct professor at Seattle University from 2002 to 2006 and a Ford Fellow for Entrepreneurial Journalism at The Poynter Institute from 2010 to 2012.

Outstanding practical guide

The industry is changing rapidly, but this second edition is fresh and up-to-date, as of April 2013. As a 30-year print journalist and four-year new-media entrepreneur, I found the hands-on aspects of the book, as well as the resource links, to be invaluable. I appreciate the fact that Briggs included data journalism and online community management in addition to standard blogging, photo, audio and video journalism. As an adjunct journalism instructor, I require it as the main textbook for my multimedia students. The only criticism I have is that maybe the time has come for us longtime journalists to tone down comparisons between the past and now. Those distinctions are becoming irrelevant, especially to a generation of students who know only the world of today and need to prepare for the world of tomorrow.

Highly Recommended for Any Journalist

This book covers the changing landscape of journalism and reporting as we move into the digital age. This book is full of wonderful advice from people who are successful in their own "niches" of journalism.

It also contains a section about technology in general for journalists. Beware: It is extremely simplistic with basics like the definition of gigabyte, how to use FTP, basic HTML.

Personally, I most enjoyed the later chapters with practical tips and advice for making journalistic work more interesting and taking full advantage of the array of new tools available to us.

The book also contains basic advice for choosing digital tools(digital recorders, etc) and preparing content for digital publishing.

Overall, I highly recommend this book for any journalist.

Five stars are not enough. This is an absolutely superb introduction to Wittgenstein's thought, its background, its development, and its later influence. Schroeder does a wonderful job explaining both the 'Tractatus' and the later 'Philosophical Investigations', and the relationship between the two.

On a certain representationalist ("picture theory") view of language, Wittgenstein thought that the analytic perspective known as logical atomism had to be correct on logical grounds, and that all the problems of philosophy capable of being sensibly talked about were thereby solved, at least in principle. The logical form of a sensible assertion about the facts of the world must mirror the logical form of the facts it describes. Bertrand Russell's work had created an audience primed to accept such a doctrine, and analytical philosophy was off and running. The logical positivists, for example, quickly picked it up to use as a sword to slay all metaphysics and to put ethical and aesthetic assertions in their proper place -- somewhere outside of philosophy properly construed. Ayer's 'Language, Truth, and Logic' presented this approach to a wide audience. The 'Tractatus' itself was not easy to understand, and Wittgenstein protested that he was being misinterpreted in important ways. But he had revolutionized philosophy nevertheless.

But Wittgenstein, meanwhile, was having second thoughts about the representationalist view of language that was foundational to his 'Tractatus'. In actual use, language gets used in myriad ways other than to describe a factual situation, ways that often have a slippery quality that is not amenable to logical analysis. Philosophical analysis cannot create a level of precision that does not exist in the actual use of the language. If a concept describes no more than a "family resemblance" among the particulars it is used to refer to, then no amount of analysis can render it sharp. A sharpened concept would be a new and artificial one, a construction of the philosopher and no longer the one being used by real speakers. Wittgenstein argued that language that is not disciplined by some contact with the world is free to spin its wheels and end up in all kinds of nonsense. Thus, a speaker cannot usefully provide meaning to his utterances by some private mental imagery that accompanies them; meaningful communication requires that the meaning of words is a matter of their socially established, conventional uses; we know what words mean when we know how they are used in our linguistic community. It was considerations like these, and many more, that led Wittgenstein to the views that were eventually published as 'Philosophical Investigations', and to leave behind the pinched version of language found in the 'Tractatus'. In effect, he launched a revolution against his own, earlier, revolution.

I cannot recommend Schroeder's book highly enough. Its organization is just right, it covers all the major issues, and the writing is extremely good. There is plenty of historical context and biographical detail. Schroeder knows his subject inside and out, including the secondary literature and commentary that has grown up around Wittgenstein's work. Systematic, crystal clear, and comprehensive -- what more could you want? I would love to take this author's course on Wittgenstein, because he must be a superlative teacher. Highest possible recommendation.

Zweig, former executive editor of Brain/Mind Bulletin, and Abrams, a Jungian therapist, offer a provocative collection of more than 60 brief pieces (most of them extracts from longer works) exploring the "shadow," the part of the unconscious self that a conscious mind sees as undesirable and tries to define as the "other." Christine Downing considers how a person might project the shadow self onto a same-sex sibling, while Maggie Scarf describes the ways in which husbands and wives can do the same thing: one spouse, for instance, expressing anger for the spouse who shuns the hostile feelings, turning an "intrapsychic problem" into "interpersonal conflict." Jerome S. Bernstein looks at this phenomenon in collective terms: the U.S. sees its darker self in the Soviet Union and vice versa. Many of the contributors note the dangers of ignoring one's own shadow, and the volume concludes with texts that discuss ways of coming to terms with it. Ken Wilber suggests that people should try to recognize and play out aspects of their rejected selves in order to heal "the split between persona and cap is correct/pk Shadow."

Useful perspectives honoring what most of us dread.

The editors have collected diverse opinions that point to the power, value and wisdom alive within the parts of ourselves that we most often deny, detest and fear. Readers just entering into awareness of the shadow side of personality and the worth of honoring rather than repressing it will find many valuable ideas that challenge traditional notions of 'good' and 'evil'. More experienced seekers on the paths of Shadow wisdom may find thoughts that confirm or deepen insights to unlock even greater personal power and creativity. The book is arranged into short essays, some of which come from various journals or other books. This approach allows the reader to gain little tastes of various authors, which can lead to further exploration. I found this overview to be quite helpful. Sections introduce the concept of the Shadow; its developmental origins; somatic and sexual expressions; Shadow manifestations in relationships, work and society; deeply engrossing sections about Shadow energy in religion and psychology; techniques for coming to recognize and learn from the Shadow, etc. There is much wisdom in these pages, a wisdom which does not flinch from what betrays us, does not condemn what holds our secrets and shames, does not hold false promises or quick fixes for a topic that is central to personal and societal evolution. While most people will not show an interest or ability to recognize the Work that this topic points toward, those with the eyes, stomach and heart to accept a truly polished mirror will learn much about themselves.

About the Author
Tanya Baker has been teaching high school English for the past eight years. She has presented nationally and internationally. A mentor teacher in the University of Maine PDN network, Baker has recently completed her Master's degree at the University of Maine and is a 1997 National Writing Project Fellow.

Julie Dube Hackett taught English and reading at the secondary level for seven years. A frequent presenter at national educational conferences, she was recently hired as Principal of Medway Middle School. Dube is a 1997 National Writing Project Fellow and has also worked as a mentor teacher in the University of Maine PDN network.

Jeffrey Wilhelm is coauthor with Michael Smith and James Fredricksen of Get It Done!; Oh, Yeah?!; and So, What's the Story?. Jeff has cowritten or coedited four other Heinemann books, Going with the Flow, "Reading Don't Fix No Chevys", Strategic Reading, and Imagining to Learn. For Chevys he and coauthor Jeff Wilhelm received the NCTE David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research in the Teaching of English. Jeff is an internationally-known teacher, author, and presenter. He is driven by a desire to help teachers to help their students to more powerful literacy and compassionate, democratic living. What he most wants for teachers to get out of his work is motivation, a vital passion and impulse to continue experimenting and learning about teaching, as well as ways to frame instruction so it is meaningful and compelling to students. A classroom teacher for fifteen years, Jeff is currently Professor of English Education at Boise State University. He works in local schools as part of a Virtual Professional Development Site Network sponsored by the Boise State Writing Project, and regularly teaches middle and high school students. He is the founding director of the Maine Writing Project and the Boise State Writing Project. He has authored or coauthored numerous books and articles about literacy teaching and learning. In addition to the Russell award, his "You Gotta BE the Book" won the NCTE Promising Research Award. Jeff has worked on numerous materials and software programs for students including Scholastic's e21 and ReadAbout, and has edited a series of 100 books for reluctant readers entitled The Ten. Jeff enjoys speaking, presenting, working with students and schools. He is currently researching how students read and engage with non-traditional texts like video game narratives, manga, horror, fantasy, etc. as well as the effects of inquiry teaching on teachers, students, and learning. Jeff grew up on a small strawberry farm in Northeastern Ohio. He loved the Hardy Boys as a boy, and has continued to love reading ever since, progressing through Hermann Hesse, John Steinbeck, and James Baldwin as literary mentors. In high school he was named a Harrier All-American for cross-country and track. He was then a two-time Small College All-American in Cross-country. He has competed Internationally in cross country, track, and nordic skiing. He now enjoys marathon nordic skiing and whitewater kayaking.
