A Pure Classic

Jim Starlin is one of the best writers Marvel has ever employed, in my opinion. With this definitive take on Thanos, Starlin shows why he was the go-to guy for anything cosmic for Marvel, especially in the 80's and early 90's. Taking what could have been a distinctly goofy and over-the-top plot (Thanos used the combine might of the Infinity Gems to wipe out half of all life in the Universe) and made it not only a fantastic read, but nearly Shakespearean in nature thanks to the backstory Starlin provides for Thanos and his attempts to prove his love for Mistress Death. Overall a masterful piece of writing and one of the all time definitive Marvel titles. This is why Thanos was chosen to be the big bad of the MCU.

Required Reading in Anticipation of the Avengers 2

This volume collects Infinity Gauntlet #1-6 which is a pretty complete story on it's own. Now, Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos does include the events that lead up to the Inifity Gauntlet, but flashbacks and other exposition cover the vital information from that collection as well as the backstories of most of the major players.

The story is basically this. A villian by the name of Thanos has aquired the Infinity Gauntlet which is powered by the Infinity Gems giving ultimate power essentially making him God. He is in love with the female personification of Death and as his gift to her he kills half of the sentient life in the universe with the snap of his fingers. On Earth, heros unite with cosmic gaurdians in a last futile stand against a mad god at the end of the Universe. This story has everyone. Adam Warlock, Thanos, Silver Sufer, Galactus, The Watcher, Wolverine, the Hulk, the Avengers, the X-Men, Dr. Strange, Quasar, Dr. Doom, Mephisto, and many more.

Pretty much anyone who was anyone back in 1991 is in this. The art is absolutely gorgeous and the story is beyond epic. Space, time, and reality are bent, broken, and destroyed in a cosmic struggle to stop Thanos. I can't recommend this enough. Sequels to this story include Infinity War (Marvel Comics), Infinity Crusade - Volume 1 (v. 1), and Infinity Crusade - Volume 2 (v. 2). All of which I've read and recommend.

READ THIS BOOK!

Jim Starlin proved himself to be one of the most innovative and complex comic book writers ever. The depth of his characters in Marvel's 1991 comic book:The Infinity Gauntlet is daunting to imagine. Starlin balances dozens of Marvel's greatest heroes beautifully. Each character is given something interesting to do and they all play their part.The narrative is so very intricate as Starlin combines the thrill of these heroes gathering while simultaneously exploring what it means to be a hero.

The Infinity Gauntlet is lauded as one of the greatest and most important comic books ever written. As someone who just read if for the first time, I wholeheartedly agree.

Adam Warlock is essentially the central character who joins forces with all of Earth's mightiest superheroes to defeat the mad titan Thanos. I will not spoil any of the story, but merely state that I was stunned by the complexity of the storytelling techniques Starlin used to write this book. He constantly switches narrators and perspectives to give the reader every side of the story. It's all so effortless.

The artwork is likewise magnificent as George Pérez illustrates all these wonderful depictions of the heroes, worlds, and powers. The colors are so vivid and everything just pops. It's easy to see how audiences everywhere fell in love with this book. Massive in scope, yet the story and characters are so empathetic, The Infinity Gauntlet may very well be the best comic book Marvel ever released.

The book in NOT in Color.

It is a good and much needed book, but unfortunately is in gray scale, so all the graphic examples/comparisons are difficult to fully appreciate and analyze.

Would have appreciate to be warned about it (all my other similar O'Reilly books came in colors). I'm returning it today.

good visual handbook on modern mobile UI design patterns

I just wrapped up reading [1] Theresa Neil's "Mobile Design Pattern Gallery" (published by O'Reilly), and I am happy to call it a worthwhile survey. I say "survey" because that's exactly what we have here: Neil takes a look at the dominant patterns (and anti-patterns) in the application interface designs that are targeted at mobile devices, and casts a wide net to cover as many of the major patterns as possible. The book does not take a particularly deep dive into any of the specific patterns--or even any one constellation of patterns--but it does hit the high notes for the critical interface paradigms that an application interface developer will face.

Neil covers these patterns as befits the survey style: by presenting each one (categorized/grouped accordingly), giving a short description of what characterizes the patterns, what situations present a good fit for that pattern, as well as pointing out the most common risks associated with that pattern. Each pattern then gets a series of screenshots from actual mobile applications which serve to demonstrate a successful or particularly illustrative example of that pattern. Neil covers: primary and secondary navigations (chapter 1); all kinds of forms and form elements (chapter 2); tables and lists (chapter 3) and charts (chapter 6); searching, sorting, and filtering (chapter 4); on-screen tools (chapter 5) and providing user feedback (chapter 8); as well as how to create accessible help messaging (chapter 9) and "invitations" within the application to draw users to those other elements (chapter 7). There is some repetition of patterns across chapters, but that helps to impress upon you how valuable these patterns are, and why they work the way that they work in those contexts.

The final chapter on "Anti-Patterns" was a particularly useful (and fun!) read, as well. Neil presents five anti-patterns in mobile UI design, [2] along with explanations on what makes them anti-patterns, and then suggestions on how to work within the previously discussed best practices to improve those designs. These case studies are useful because Neil is careful to break down each example into atomic mistakes, to identify the (likely) motivation behind those design choices, to explain why those design choices fail, and then to illustrate more sensible designs that accomplish the same thing but in a more intuitive fashion.

Though generally well composed, there are a couple of places where the book falls down a bit. First, the text and the images don't always match up--or, rather: the images that follow the text too often follow the text on the next page. Several times (especially early on) I found myself reading something, doubling back to look at the image, and being confused for a moment or two before advancing and "putting the name with the face"; this is an artifact of the medium, but it was a little jarring. Second, there are a couple of spots in the book that could have benefitted from another pass through spelling/grammar editors (e.g., "robust productivity tools *t* usually include tables", and "*state-full* buttons" (*emphasis* mine). Third, I could have used a concluding chapter to bring it all together--the "Anti-Patterns" chapter (sort of) does this implicitly, and there is a nice appendix [3], but I got to that final page and thought: "Where are the parting words?" Lastly, [4] the mobile space is moving so rapidly that this book may wind up feeling out-of-date in the not-too-distant future. There are several screenshots from several apps that are already out of sync with what's out there "in the wild"; this is good--because it means that those developers are innovating and changing their applications to improve their experiences, but it also seems to make these examples... less potent.

That being said, there are some important take-aways from Neil's book--whether you're doing mobile-specific development (her target audience for this book), or just designing/developing interfaces on any platform. Having big "tap" targets is critical for mobile apps, and though it's less important for a desktop application, the lesson about giving "more visual weight" to your primary call-to-action button? You'll carry that with you in all of your UI designs. With that in mind, I did find myself writing down notes that said things like: [5]

* *an axiom:* "Be deliberate when introducing novelty."
* *an axiom:* "Make it finger-friendly."
* *an axiom:* "If you cannot be native, be neutral and not novel."

The images were there--sometimes as screenshots, and sometimes in the illustrations--to capture these sentiments, but sometimes I felt like there needed to be pithy sayings like those to drive the point home. Something... sound-bite-size. Does the book suffer because it lacks these? No, it does not. Perhaps they were even left out intentionally, as an exercise for you (the reader) to digest and internalize the lessons.

These principles led to true success for me

I was Dr. Alex Loyd's personal editor for his first book, The Healing Code: 6 Minutes to Heal the Source of Your Health, Success, or Relationship Issue. While The Healing Codes provided amazing healing to many areas of my life, it was the material in this book, Beyond Willpower, that led to my success.

As a former self-help junkie with a fascination for success, I had read lots of the books and tried lots of the approaches to success. Nothing ever worked (except for Noah St. John's The Secret Code of Success: 7 Hidden Steps to More Wealth and Happiness, which is a nice complement to Beyond Willpower). Beyond Willpower explains why the typical success strategies fail 97% of the time. Success certainly eluded me until I started using Dr. Alex Loyd's principles, which I was introduced to through his weekly "Spiritual Laws of Nature" calls, a live seminar, and his LT3 program. But in this book he expands on it all in a way I've not heard before.

I think it's bad taste to brag about one's success. Let me just say that in every area of life, I am fulfilled, thanks in large part to these principles. In Beyond Willpower, one of the things Dr. Alex Loyd does is help you define true success and true success goals. Most of us have the wrong success goals and are therefore doomed to failure. I have found true success in every area of my life as I daily try to practice what he calls The Greatest Principle: "to do everything in love, out of an inward state reprogrammed with love, joy, peace, focusing on the present moment."

The HOWS of doing this are elaborated on in the book. Here is a detailed explanation of how the "spiritual heart" works, employing analogies we couldn't have used a few decades back: deprogramming and reprogramming, pulling up images on "the Heart Screen," "identifying your basic human hard-drive viruses." (I like that the author reminds us that computers are patterned after the way WE are wired, not vice versa.) Dr. Loyd explains how it all works and gives you Three Tools.

I was a little surprised that his Energy Medicine tools were completely different from The Healing Code, and that The Healing Code was never mentioned. Personally, I will continue to use The Healing Codes because I know that energy tool works, but I can see many ways these new tools can be used with my Healing Codes work with clients, or for anyone who is familiar with The Healing Code. For instance, the Reprogramming Statements and Heart Screen tools can easily be used while doing a Healing Code.

Also, if you already have The Success Codes package, the success blueprint here will look very familiar. You can use The Success Codes as the Energy Healing tool, but there is so much more in this book that will complement it. Using the other two tools from this book will really help you get the most out of The Success Codes.

Beyond Willpower is very practical. Dr. Loyd gives you ways to diagnose the blocks that are holding you back, and the tools to remove them and allow you to live the Greatest Principle, almost effortlessly.

I just took the Success Issues Finder (one of the free diagnostic tools, www.successissuesfinderinfo.com). While my scores weren't all in the +7 or above category (the ultimate benchmark), they were all in the positive range and the overall score was +4 (which is just under the third benchmark). At that level I'm pretty fulfilled, though it's nice to know there's room to grow.

I especially appreciated the Epilogue, in which Dr. Loyd talks about "Practical Spirituality." No matter where you're coming from spiritually, I think you'll find something to chew on here.

In fact, if I have any criticism at all, it might be that he talks about living in Grace, but doesn't give you the source of it. Without a doubt, the reason these principles work for me is that I draw on the Source of Grace for the power to live this way. It's as if this book is a fancy new-fangled car that Dr. Alex Loyd is giving you, along with a road map to a wonderful destination. The only catch is, this new-fangled car runs on a special kind of fuel, and you are not told the special place where you can get that fuel. You're left to figure it out on your own. Maybe that's a good thing...

To change the analogy, this book gives you some gardening tools that can get rid of the rocks and weeds so that the Seed, this Truth that is Grace, can take root. The tool kit is not the seed; it has no life, nor power to cause life.

If you already know that Grace is in a particular Person, then this book will map out a very effective sort of spiritual discipline for getting rid of the "heart issues" that can block you from Grace and the true success that comes from living in Grace.

If you don't already know this Source of Grace ... read the Gospel of John, especially the first chapter. There you'll encounter the Person who is the fuel of Grace. Then you'll have the power to drive to that wonderful destination (true success) in your new-fangled car.

P.S. ADDED: I can't help adding something else from my perspective as an author and former publishing coach.

Whenever I come across a book that clearly puts forth decades of wisdom from an author, I want to stand up and applaud. I call these "real bookss," as opposed to those books (usually self-published) that are thinly disguised advertising pieces. I just downloaded one the other day (it was free) that was essentially a transcript of the video pitch. And she called it a book!

"Real books" used to be the norm. Skilled editors would weed out the kind of "books" that now flood the market. Since anyone can publish nowadays, we readers have to figure out on our own what is wheat and what is chaff.

Beyond Willpower is the result of 25 years of Alex Loyd's researching, sifting, living, testing this material. It shows. There is so much here! For me it's a manual I will be absorbing and referring to for some time.

Dr. Loyd was kind enough to send me a review copy, but I still bought one for 2 reasons: 1) I want a copy to lend out, and need to keep mine on my desk for reference for myself and my work with clients (as I said, there's a lot here) and 2) I want to support "real books" with my wallet whenever I can.

Thank you, Dr. Loyd, and all your editors and publishing people, for continuing to see that "real books" are published.

What you think you know about Goal Setting and the Law of Attraction is all wrong.

UPDATE: 6/9/16 - Dr. Loyd was absolutely right. Physical healing followed. With the cooperation of my Alternative MD, I have weaned off 2 medications and replacement hormones and been able to cut other medications for Addison's Disease and Hypothyroidism in HALF or more. I am finally gaining enough energy to participate in life again. I am beyond thrilled. The way I had been feeling, I wasn't sure if I would ever get life as I knew it back again. Frankly, I wasn't sure I could even continue to live at all as bad as I was when I began my journey with Dr. Loyd's work. It's been 3 years since I started and I have hope to participate in life again. I am happy, calm and I can honestly say that I finally understand unconditional LOVE; how to give it and how to receive it. So my HEART healed first and now my physical body is healing. How wonderful is that?!

Yes, that’s right, what you think you know about setting goals, making Vision boards and the law of attraction is all wrong. Having read literally every self improvement, motivational and law of attraction author there is out there, Napoleon Hill, Kiyosaki, Tracy, Rohn, Vitale, Robbins, etc. etc. (and listened to and bought all of their CD's), I can tell you that all of your programming is wrong. (And I have two bookshelves full of these books/CD's -- BIG bookshelves). And after 25 years of trying it their way, my finances seemed hopeless, my health had deteriorated to the point where I was bedridden despite knowing and been treated by all of the best Naturopaths, Homeopaths, Alternative MD's and the like, I applied what Dr. Alex Loyd taught me and today, have more Peace, Calm, Love and Happiness than I ever thought was possible and I thought was so elusive in this life. Did you know that the minute you set goals, make vision boards or positive affirmations, it puts your brain into an immediate state of chronic stress. (Truly, I never felt comfortable doing those things, even though they made me in all those seminars I took and spent thousands of dollars on, not to mention my time.) This keeps you from achieving those things that you set out to do. Do you ever feel like you're "self sabotaging"? This is why. The stressors or emotional events that you have experienced from your past are programmed into your brain and nervous system, so that when you bump into similar situations, things immediately shut down. Do you feel like you keep having to deal with the same difficult people or stressful events over and over again? There is a "short" in your nervous system and programming that basically says, if you don't learn this lesson, you're going to keep going through it over and over until you do. But you CAN'T. You're not wired to do so. It's called Cellular Memory. Perhaps you've heard of muscle memory. Similar concept. This book and these exercises will help you to break the cycle. And believe me, you CAN do it! Having taken Dr. Loyd's live program, I can assure you that my life has turned around so very much for the better. Things just seems to be falling into place. No, it's not going to make life a breeze, as we still have to deal with life and what happens in it. But I can honestly say that emotionally, I feel more calm and at peace than ever before! That is not an exaggeration! I lived with so much worry and anxiety and my creative consciousness could come up with the most amazing horrible scenarios of everything that could possibly go wrong. I was a chronic worrier and lived in constant anxiety. I can also tell you that I paid for hours of time with a therapist doing EFT. It may have helped a little at the time, but was not long lasting, the same issues kept coming up. I believe the work in Beyond Willpower is permanently helpful, and life changing.

So I can tell you that Dr. Loyd's program has changed my life so much for the better. That old stuff just doesn't bother me anymore. I LIVE life. I enjoy life, without all the worry and anxiety. My health is a work in progress, but also improving by leaps & bounds. Dr. Loyd says the emotional state heals first, the physical healing will follow. That has been a truth for me. I am a work in progress. So while I can't tell you there is a magic wand you can wave and you'll be rich, find your soul mate and be magically cured of whatever ails you. I can tell you that if you will invest a little bit of work and do what the book instructs, you WILL find much more: Peace, Calm, Love & Happiness than you've probably ever known. And with that, all of the road blocks will be removed and you can probably heal your physical body too. But you must do the work. Please. I'm begging you. It will be worthwhile. And well worth your time. Because if you keep doing what you have been doing, you’ll continue bumping into the same road blocks. It will be worth a daily time investment of however long it takes to heal your life PERMANENTLY. Thanks for listening.

Beyond any other self-help book of its kind

I was Dr. Alex Loyd's personal editor for this book, and before we began working together, I had never heard of the author or his material before. As a book editor and writer who works with more than 100 authors a year, as a policy I don’t post Amazon reviews for clients to avoid any conflict of interest. But I couldn’t help but violate my own policy for this book, because it has had such a powerful effect upon me personally.

At first, I approached this book like any other, practicing the material and immersing myself in the process. Despite my initial skepticism, I discovered that the Greatest Principle really did work for me. Using the diagnostics, the tools, and the process of the Success Blueprint, I was able to identify the subconscious source of some pervasive stress in my life, and I became completely deprogrammed and reprogrammed regarding this issue. As time has passed, this change has remained permanent and effortless.

I had thought the testimonials I had seen for this material (often written in all caps and lots of enthusiastic punctuation) were rather sensationalistic, but when it happened to me, I found myself e-mailing Alex in all caps as well—and that is not the way I write e-mails! I have continued to use the Success Blueprint on two other major issues in my life, with equally transformative results.

Note: the process is not a quick fix – I had to take a few months to work through the Basic Diagnostics and only then was I ready to apply the Success Blueprint to a specific issue, which did take me the full 40 days.

I am incredibly thankful for Alex Loyd and the material he is sharing in Beyond Willpower/The Love Code.

Frank R. Ascione, Ph.D. is the American Humane Endowed Chair at the Graduate School of Social Work, University of Denver. He has co-edited two books�€”Cruelty to Animals and Interpersonal Violence: Readings in Research and Application (1998), Child Abuse, Domestic Violence, and Animal Abuse: Linking the Circles of Compassion for Prevention and Intervention (1998)�€”and authored Safe Havens for Pets: Guidelines for Programs Sheltering Pets for Women who are Battered. Children and Animals: Exploring the Roots of Kindness and Cruelty is his latest book and was published in 2005 by Purdue University Press. As a clinical faculty at the Graduate School of Social Work, at the University of Denver, I teach courses in both the inclusion of animals to support therapeutic and human health efforts, as well as in forensic social work practice models. An important element of that curriculum requires understanding and recognizing animal abuse and we have been waiting for such a well-supported and foundational review as found in this book. We certainly will be including this volume into our graduate students required readings.

The academic value of this book is unquestionable, but it is the clinical focus of the book that will inspire and improve the accuracy of the professional clinician. In my work as a forensic social worker, I am responsible for making public safety decisions requiring performing risk and violence assessment on many high-risk individuals. This book will be an invaluable resource, as it provides, a clinical overview of factors associated with animals abuse encountered as considerations in the assessment and intervention of individuals engaging in sexual, physical and emotional abusive behavior.

One of the most compelling theories that seems to emerge out of this important work is the relevance of animals, their care and our relational capacity with them as a measure of human health. By careful examination of Dr. Ascione's book, we begin to understand the human-animal bond and it's potential consequences. Healthy connection with animals can be used to enhance protective factors that can build resilience against the risk factors many young people face. This may include the role animal's play in the normative developmental factors in children and the powerful effect animal cruelty may have on the early onset and progression of disruptive behavior disorders.

The contributions to this book examine these dynamic factors from multiple perspectives. Although each contributor's chapter is well supported and highly informative, I was especially appreciative of the inclusion of Andrea Beetz chapter, as the issues of sexually abusive behavior toward animals have long needed discussion and attention as well as Dr. Gary Patronik's illumination of the serious problem and curious human behaviors associated with animal hoarding.

Diagnostic and clinical theory, sociological perspective, research agendas, law enforcement approaches, policy and legislative considerations are explored in this astounding compilation. Of special note, multicultural perspectives are provided allowing for strong certainty that the issue of animal abuse and cruelty is a shared concern and not just as a unique measure to our families and communities.

Once again Dr. Ascione has given his time and talent to bring understanding to this complex topic and provide a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves.

Since the late 1800s, the link between animal cruelty and other violence in society has been presumed and discussed (including at the 1894 American Humane Association annual convention), but until recent decades very little empirical research existed to lend scientific validity to the notion. In this new international handbook, Dr. Ascione presents a lineup of respected authors from many scientific disciplines studying animal abuse and from professional fields addressing the connection between animal welfare and child and family well-being. In addition to presenting a historical analysis of animal welfare issues and their impact on human welfare issues, the handbook reviews important emerging research and explores practical applications for prevention, intervention and treatment. This body of work demonstrates the great progress that is being made in systematically studying these connections, and informs the research agenda for scholars in human-animal studies.

Animal Abuse and domestic violence association

Well done and gives the reader a clear understanding of the path the HSUS and ASPCA are taking to validate their premise that animal abuse is associated with domestic violence. The editor notes at the beginning that record keeping is not consistant from state to state or county to county w/in states. Researchers had to take statistics they could find. A select group of large and small cities were used to sample records of documented animal abuse and domestic violence. The description of animal abuse as well as domestic violence varied. Consequently, until a uniform description can be developed, research will not be sound enough to validate the association. This text is still a good starting point and I have already suggested the book to a student attorney who understands the animal rights movement and the guardian v pet ownership issue.

A Great Read!!! Thrilling and Captivating!

This is a great read! I really enjoyed it, and I would love to see this novel made into a movie. It is very well written, intertwining history, alchemy, and fiction in order to make a beautiful novel of mystery and intrigue. I was glued to the pages from the very beginning, and it is quite obvious that Everett has poured much love and care into this novel, diligently researching the history of ink, the printing press, and Gutenberg in order to create a roller coaster ride of a novel for his readers.

I was very impressed with the natural flow of the novel and Everett's ability to captivate the reader through his interesting characters and enticing plotline. Both Keith and Madeline are very memorable characters, stealing the reader's heart before the novel really begins. Lovers, they set the stage for romance in this psychological thriller as they battle against an unknown foe, set on destroying the libraries Keith and Madeline frequent, as they attempt to uncover the Gutenberg secret. Fans of Dan Brown (author of The Da Vinci Code, et.al) should definitely pick up this novel! Four stars!

This question leads the brilliant but eccentric professor Keith Drucker and rare books librarian Madeline Zayne on a transcontinental search for clues about who might be bombing the rare book libraries of the world, what an encoded rubric and stolen manuscript reveal about arcane rituals and biblio-terrorism and what fabulous treasure is at the end of the search. And if they find it, will they survive to tell the tale?

Nathan Everett crafts an intriguing story of just what it might mean when a pressman says he has 'ink running in his veins', and pushes us through an entertaining labyrinth of leads to a satisfying and surprising end.

Couldn't stop reading!

I bought this yesterday for Kindle and I already finished reading it! I couldn't stop reading. If you're looking for something to compare it to, think Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code meets National Treasure. The book teaches you about printing and alchemy without lecturing and actually makes it interesting!

The story is well-paced; you're never flipping pages thinking, "When am I going to get to the good stuff??" The characters are extremely likable (when you're supposed to like them) and very real. You feel like you get to know them as you're reading and he leaves you wanting to move in with them and see what happens next.

I was a little skeptical when I started reading. The author isn't super well-known and I had no real idea what to expect. He quickly changed my mind. I will say this: Anyone who can take printing and alchemy and turn it into an engaging thriller deserves to be a known entity!

In the 11th Richard Sharpe novel, our intrepid hero finds himself in the Spanish colony of Chile during its fight for independence in 1820-21. Hired by the wife of a Spanish nobleman to locate her kidnapped husband, the captain-general of Chile, Sharpe and friend Patrick Harper sail halfway around the world on a mission complicated by political intrigue and corruption. Series fans will find the usual strong characterization and action sequences, but some scenes, particularly the storming of the forts protecting the harbor of Valdivia, seem undeveloped and lacking in Cornwell's customary detail. Public libraries should purchase according to demand.

The hero of Cornwell's Sharpe series (Sharpe's Revenge, etc.) reluctantly abandons his Norman hearth and home to search for an old friend gone missing in revolutionary Chile. En route to the new world, there's a stopover on St. Helena and a visit to Sharpe's old adversary, the imprisoned Bonaparte. The Napoleonic wars are over. The Corsican monster is safely imprisoned in the South Atlantic; Sharpe's unloved wife is safely settled back in England; and Lieutenant-Colonel Sharpe himself has happily settled into the role of gentleman-farmer, tending to the fields of his aristocratic French mistress, watching his illegitimate children frolic. The bucolic bliss ends, however, with the arrival of Louisa, Countess of Mouromorto, who has come from Spain to beg the retired British rifleman to sail to South America to search for her husband, Sharpe's old friend and comrade-in-arms Don Blas Vivar. The incorruptible Don Blas had gone to Chile to defend the rotten Spanish colonial government against upstart republicans, but he has not been seen or heard from in months. Since Louisa will pay handsomely for his services and since the chateau is in desperate need of repairs, Sharpe reluctantly accepts the commission, hires on his favorite old sergeant, Patrick Harper, and sails round the Horn. His reception is chilly. The colonial general, who should be helping Sharpe, makes nothing but trouble, and Sharpe eventually finds himself becoming more and more sympathetic to the rebels who fight under a disgraced Scottish nobleman. An interesting historical account

The plot assumes that ships could land passengers at St. Helena in 1820 to interview Napoleon. Such was not the case. The British fired on any unauthorized ship attempting to approach the island including, in one case, a ship in distress. Other than that, it is an interesting tale.
This is the last novel, chronologically, in the Richard Sharpe series. Sharpe is separated from his wife and living in France with his latest mistress and their two children. His shortage of money indicates his wife in England has everything he stole in Spain. When the Countess of Mouromorto shows up to hire Sharpe to find her missing husband in Chile, his mistress is very receptive to the sight of the money (needed to improve her farm). Sharpe finds himself on his way to Chile with his old friend Patrick Harper, and makes the aforementioned stop at St. Helena to see Napoleon.
Sharpe and Harper become involved, unwillingly, in the civil war raging in Chile between the Spanish royalists and the rebels under O'Higgins (supported by Lord Cochrane). Sharpe's fortunes take some twists and turns, as does the plot. The involvement of Lord Cochrane in Chile is described fairly accurately, including the action at Valdivia. Sharpe, of course, gets his share of the spoils. One can hope that Sharpe will fare better with his latest mistress than he has with earlier women in his life. Having Sharpe acquire bags full of loot always creates the possibility of further action (after all, Lord Cochrane did invite him to go along, and we know from history that Lord Cochrane later served in Brazil and Greece).

Out of retirement for Mister Sharpe!

It is 1821, six years after the Battle of Waterloo. Richard Sharpe, veteran of the French Wars, has made his home and family in Normandy. However, the sudden arrival of Blas Vivar's wife alerts this instinctive hero to trouble. It is up to Sharpe in locating General Blas Vivar and bring him back from revolutionary Chile. Seeking out a fattened Patrick Harper - formerly his Irish sergeant-major - the two friends make their way by ship to the distant shores of the New World. They stop off at St. Helena to pay their respects to an exiled emperor: once the Scourge of Europe, now a saddened, sickened old man, plagued by what his own greatness could have brought France. Despite his restrictions, and being a former enemy, Napoleon proves a charming, almost sympathetic host. Yet, from almost beginning to end, Sharpe is tricked into aiding a conspiracy that could drench all the Americas in blood and turmoil. I won't spoil it for you by elaborating. But I will mention that the last (chonologically!) Sharpe adventure proves most entertaining: with varied, believable characters, a strange land fully described, peopled by treacherous, corrupt, and deceitful officials who delight in toying with two foreigners on an honourable mission. The interesting aspect of this great plot is that Spain gradually becomes Sharpe's enemy. In particular, I loved the delicate interview with Napoleon; Bautista proved a most cowardly, cunning arch-villain, and the wild, courageous rebel Cochrane added extra spice to a gripping read. Sharpe is set on course for an insane pursuit to find the truth about Vivar - and escape the jaws of certain death!

Outstanding Post-Napoleonic Wars Adventure

Six years after the end of the Napoleonic wars, ex-Rifleman Richard Sharpe toils on his French wife's farm in Normandy. Times are a little tough, so when the fabulously wealthy wife of a former Spanish comrade asks him to travel to Chile to find her missing husband, he can't refuse the gold that comes with the request. Naturally, Sharpe rounds up the now-rotund and prosperous tavern-keeper Patrick Harper before setting sail for South America. Their vessel is a Spanish one, ferrying a number of patronizing and foppish Spanish officers who are off to fight the Chilean rebels (who are led by the intriguing half-Spanish, half-Irish gentleman Bernardo O'Higgins). These Spaniards decide to take a minor detour to St. Helena to gawk at the imprisoned Napoleon, and of course Sharpe and Harper can't resist the chance to pay their own respects. The ex-emperor is by now rotting away in his dank mansion, with peeling wallpaper, a poor wine-cellar, and a large British garrison to keep him company. Treated like a curiosity in a zoo, he is disdainful of the Spaniards, but is intrigued by Sharpe and Harper, who are clearly fellow warriors. Cornwell has a lot of fun with this section, as the two old soldiers talk shop, honor each other, and Sharpe, with his customary naivite is unwittingly drawn into intrigue.

Eventually, the ship arrives in Chile, where Sharpe is told the man he is seeking, Captain-General Vivar, is actually dead. Of course, Sharpe is suspicious when a body can't be produced, and soon he and Harper have run afoul of the thoroughly evil Spanish Governor-General Bautista. Events entertainingly run their course, and soon the dynamic duo find themselves on the side of the rebels seeking to eject the Spaniards from Chile. They come under the wings of Admiral Cochrane, a Scottish Lord turned rebel seaman, and all around adventurer. Cochrane is a wildly daring and bold leader, a real life figure of such improbability that many readers will want to rush out and read one of the biographies about his exploits (The Audacious Admiral Cochrane by and The Sea Wolf by being two). Once in Cochrane's company, the action ratchets up until the climactic battle at Valdivia, where the ragtag rebel navy crushed the entrenched and more numerous Spanish defenders in an audacious action, heralding an end to Spanish rule. The rout also allows Sharpe to unravel the mystery of what befell Captain-General Vivar, and of course, exact retribution on the nasty Bautista.

This is indubitably a change of pace and setting from the regular Sharpe books, but a welcome one. As always, the military action is well described, there are evil villains, interesting supporting characters, and a heavy dose of vivid personages from history on hand. It's hard to imagine anyone making the nominally drab topic of Chilean independence come alive more vividly than Cornwell does here. There's a lot packed into this one, and Cornwell even manages to raise the specter of one of history's more interesting "what ifs" via an audacious plot. All in all, great fun.

PS. Anyone interested in St. Helena is advised to read Harry Ritchie's excellent travel book, The Last Pink Bits, which has a good section on how the island fares in modern times.
