This “voice” also comes across in his translation – always the mark of a good writer I think

I have had the pleasure of being a student of Nic Sutton in a study of The Bhagadvagita.
It was no surprise that he had written a translation – it would have been irresistible. I
admit to choosing his course because after a lifetime of being taught by those with Indian
and Tibetan heritage, people with Sanskrit at their core – I imagined learning from Sutton
would be easier, if only because I would understand his language foibles. Yes, his diction
does have an “anglo” influence which does not detract from his knowledge and his
enthusiasm for the subject which is comprehensive and infectious. This “voice” also
comes across in his translation – always the mark of a good writer I think, academic or
popular.
Sutton’s translation is thorough but accessible, and true to the original Sanskrit. Other
translators have designed their texts to show Sanskrit, translation and commentary – Sri
Prabhupada’s for instance. Knowing his readers to be mostly Western, Sutton has not
fallen into this trap. Sanskrit can be a barrier to the Western reader. In some translations
which rely on the Sanskrit to give them “authenticity”, the purport or commentary often
reflects the religious orientation of the translator rather than the actual words of the text
and can be more of a hindrance than a help in one’s overall understanding of what is
quite a hard text to follow, especially for a Western mind.
This difficulty is especially obvious in the rather grand translation of the Bhagavadgita by
Paramahansa Yogananda (“And God Spoke to Arjuna”) where constant reference to
Christian thought can be irritating, unhelpful and superfluous. As can Sri Prabhupada’s
tendentious pushing of the Vaishnava barrow, in his very popular translation “The
Bhagavadgita As It is”.
Being a teacher of yoga teachers, The Bhagavadgita is a core text. I was especially
drawn to Sutton’s comprehensive and copious background notes (yoga students love
“context”), careful dissection and translation into English of the Gita’s verses line by line,
the scriptural basis of the commentaries, the main themes (karma-yoga, the nature of God
and the worship of God, interpretations of the Samkhya concepts, Dhyana yoga, Atman,
Dharma), Key Concepts (Dharma, Karma, Moksha, Bhakti, Yoga, Yamas) and the
three broad strands (not original as he says, but derived from Yamunacharya one of the
earlier teachers of the Sri Vaishnava sect). Although these seem difficult, (and can be,
depending of course on the translator), Sutton manages to tease them out beautifully into
bite-sized pieces, to enable even the first timer at The ‘Gita to grasp both the literal
meaning and underlying message.
I would recommend this impressive translation to beginners and academic readers alike.
It is not only “enlightening” it is enjoyable.

Excellent Introductory Study Guide

I was introduced to the Bhagavad Gita while in high school, when I read the "Song of God" translation by Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood. I have reread the same edition at least twice over the years since. Nicholas Sutton's study guide, first offered as part of an online continuing education course at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, was my first supervised study of the Gita. Dr. Sutton's enthusiasm for the text is nicely put in his simple yet elegant translation, where challenging concepts are expressed directly in a contemporary, colloquial idiom. His commentary is thematic, which allows him to discuss groups of verses, rather than individual lines, and this has the effect of emphasizing the Gita's unity. Sutton follows the threefold division of Yamunacharya's Gitartha Samgraha, and he includes an English translation of this difficult to find work in his Introduction. There are no accompanying footnotes in this study, but Sutton singles out Edgerton (1997) and Zaehner ((1973) for reference and includes a short bibliography, which I found useful as a guide to additional reading. Sutton also does a good job of pointing out where the popular Vaishnava and Vedantist interpretations differ. One big take away from his own interpretation is that the teachings of the Gita can be applied in any situation by acting without selfish desire. Of particular note, I think, is Dr. Sutton's treatment of the Gita's teaching regarding the three gunas.

Peter Merholz is President and one of the co-founders of Adaptive Path. For more than six years, he has been instrumental in developing the company's world-class consulting, training, and public events. Peter began his work at Adaptive Path with a focus on information architecture, and has since developed expertise in product strategy, user research, and practice development.

Peter's personal blog, http://peterme.com, and his essays for Adaptive Path demonstrate his unique ability to foresee what's coming next in information architecture, organizational change, and product strategy. He has the perhaps dubious distinction of coining the term "blog" in 1999, when blogging was still a nascent genre.

Kristin Skinner is Managing Director at Adaptive Path where she established and leads the Design Program Management practice. She has shaped and lead over 40 of the firm’s most strategic and complex projects and programs, working directly with C�suite stakeholders in theFortune 50. The greatest design mentor you could ask for, in your back pocket

The minute I started reading Org Design for Design Orgs, I couldn't tear my eyes from it. It was almost 2am when I found myself in the middle of chapter 7, and had to talk myself into getting some sleep.

This book was so rich with personable, practical advice on how build design culture that I felt like I was in a cozy fireside chat with a design mentor. It was like listening to stories from someone who has lived through it all. Someone who could relate and empathize deeply with the issues I'm facing with my design organization, and give smart, actionable advice on how to proceed forward.

I’m a designer and researcher at a startup that has been through many ups and downs in the past 2 years. Our design team has struggled with getting design recognition and getting research to be valued and integrated. We've had designers hit career ruts and stunted growth, and have had friction with aligning with leadership. This book covered all these issues in well organized manner, supported by clear diagrams and real world stories. If you work on or with an in-house design team, this book is an ABSOLUTE must-read.

This truly is the book I wish I had since the beginning of my design journey. It’s the book I would reference with, write proposals and plans with, wallow in sorrow with, get uplifted with hope with. It confronts the reality of being an in-house designer straight on. I always have it with me at work, showing highlighted sections to my design manager, to product managers and engineers.

It’s not only a book that I know will be useful throughout my career in design, it’s the greatest design mentor I could ever ask for, always in my back pocket.

New approaches to music require new analytical tools, and through the analysis of some 50 albums, Encarnacao introduces the categories of labyrinth, immersive and montage forms. This book makes a compelling argument for a reconsideration of popular music history that highlights the eternal compulsion for spontaneous, imperfect and performative recorded artefacts.

About the Author

Jeanne H. Ballantine (far right) is University Professor of Sociology (emeriti) at Wright State University, a state university of about 17,000 students in Ohio. She has also taught at several 4-year colleges, including an “alternative” college and a traditionally Black college, and at international programs in universities abroad. She has been teaching introductory sociology for more than 30 years with a mission to introduce the uninitiated to the field and to help students see the usefulness and value in sociology. She has been active in the teaching movement, shaping curriculum, writing and presenting research on teaching, and offering workshops and consulting in regional, national, and international forums. She is a Fulbright Specialist Scholar and serves as a Departmental Resources Group consultant and evaluator. Jeanne has written several textbooks, all with the goal of reaching the student audience. As the original director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Wright State University, she scoured the literature on student learning and served as a mentor to teachers in a wide variety of disciplines. Local, regional, and national organizations have honored her for her teaching and for her contributions to helping others become effective teachers. In 1986, the American Sociological Association’s Section on Undergraduate Education (now called the Section on Teaching and Learning in Sociology) recognized her with the Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching of Sociology. In 2004, she was honored by the American Sociological Association with its Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award. In 2010, the North Central Sociological Association awarded her the J. Milton Yinger Award for Distinguished Career in Sociology.

Keith A. Roberts is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Hanover College, a private liberal arts college of about 1,100 students in Indiana. He has been teaching introductory sociology for more than 30 years with a passion for active learning strategies and a focus on “deep learning” by students that transforms the way they see the world. Prior to teaching at Hanover, he taught at a 2-year regional campus of a large university. He has been active in the teaching movement, writing on teaching and serving as a consultant to sociology departments across the country in his capacity as a member of the American Sociological Association Departmental Resources Group. He has written a very popular textbook in the sociology of religion, has coauthored a book on writing in the undergraduate curriculum, and for 22 years ran an annual workshop for high school sociology teachers. He has chaired the Selection Committee for the SAGE Innovations and Professional Development Awards since the program’s inception. He has been honored for his teaching and teaching-related work at local, state, regional, and national levels. The American Sociological Association’s Section on Teaching and Learning awarded him the Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching of Sociology in 2000. He was honored with the American Sociological Association’s Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award in 2010. In 2012, the North Central Sociological Association awarded Keith the J. Milton Yinger Award for Distinguished Career in Sociology.

Kathleen Odell Korgen is a professor of sociology at William Paterson University, a comprehensive university in Wayne, New Jersey. Kathleen has co-authored or co-edited numerous books that teach students to use the sociological tools they gain in their classes and to find inspiration from public sociologists and fellow sociology students. These books include The Engaged Sociologist: Connecting the Classroom to the Community, Sociologists in Action: Sociology, Social Change, and Social Justice and Sociologists in Action on Inequalities: Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality. She has also written or edited the following books on race relations and racial identity: Race Policy and Multiracial Americans (forthcoming), Multiracial Americans and Social Class, Crossing the Racial Divide: Close Friendships Between Black and White Americans, and From Black to Biracial: Transforming Racial Identity Among Americans. Kathleen works as a consultant for other sociology departments as a member of the Departmental Resources Group of the American Sociological Association. She has received William Paterson University’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship/Creative Expression and the university’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Interesting read that is broken down easily to absorb

It's a really easy read; the authors considered their audiences and translated text language into relatable language. It is definitely not as dry as other texts and the little examples help a lot regarding understanding concepts and making sense of our lives. It's basically terminology for our everyday lives put into a textbook. Definitely an informative read. I had to read this for my sociology class and enjoyed it very much.

Reason for one star: I ordered a new book. When I received the book there was some residue on the cover that I cannot get off and some of the pages were stuck together. I don't care if the book has never been read, if I ordered a new book I am expecting pristine condition. This book was a rather pricey buy so I'm expecting no flaws. Amazon took care of my concerns and did phenomenally in resolving the issue. But this has been an issue I've been experiencing lately with Amazon's books. Stains on covers really irk me when I know I chose to pay more for "new" instead of "very good" condition.

About the Author
M�lusine Draco originally trained in the magical arts of traditional British Old Craft with Bob and M�ri�m Clay-Egerton. If you thought this was just another book about crystals, think again! Not only is the author an experienced magical practitioner in her own right, but her magical tutor also held a doctorate in geology – and it shows. Not just in the obvious love of the subject but in the vast store of magical information crammed into these 186 pages. Of course there is the usual list of gemstones with their correspondences but Magic Crystals, Sacred Stones goes much further in explaining that it can be the very rocks beneath our feet that generates magical energy – and how it can affect our own magical working. Did you know, for example, that many of the stones used in our ancient monuments contain a high percentage of quartz; and that quartz is the most magically potent crystal on the planet? Another interesting aspect to this book is that the exercises at the end of each chapter are designed for the purpose of creating your own personal system of divination by crystallomancy, the ancient practice of casting lots using small stones or crystals. As well as being a practical magical guide, it is a worthy successor to those two classic historical reference works The Curious Lore of Precious Stones (Kunz) and Magical Jewels (Evans).

Earth energies in your hand

This is a really interesting book, bringing far more weight to the subject of crystals than is normal for New Age fayre. There’s a hefty reference section with more technical information than esoteric, and as a Druid, this really appeals to me. I’m wary of dogmatic spiritual interpretations of things, but going in depth on the tangible aspects we might easily agree on, and then using that as a basis for personal exploration seems like a much better idea to me. I was also very taken with the emphasis Melusine Draco places on relating to the rocks beneath your feet. Knowing what you are stood on, where that comes from and what it means is a way of connecting with the earth, and the massive time scales of geology are a useful counter-perspective for human issues. If you are working with earth energies or crystals, or want to work with personally sourced stones, there’s a lot to be gained from reading this book.

The author, an heir to a Traditional Witchcraft Coven dating to the mid-nineteenth century, would be at home in a Circle or a university lecture hall. This book is as much an exposition of the mysteries of Witchcraft, and the witch’s treasures in the earth, as it is a guide to geology. If you’re looking for a crystals-of-Atlantis or some other kind of New Age nonsense fluff, this is not the book for you. If you want solid, tried and tested knowledge that will aid your practice, make you think, and challenge you to do the spade-and-shovel work of real Witchcraft, this is what you’ve been looking for. Carl Sagan called geology the “study of time and pressure.” Melusine Draco has expanded that science to include Witchcraft in a way that is elegant and disciplined. This book is a “must have” for any student of the Nameless Art.
