Excellent book on Dragons

For many centuries that the dragon has been the symbol of China, and has been considered as immortal and omnipresent ever since ancient times. It has belonged to the people, and it has also been the symbol of monarchy and supreme power. The dragon was a mythical beast. It was a concept. But most Chinese people, indeed most Asian people, were convinced that it existed. There are many occasions when there were claims that it had been seen, even as recently as 1920. No other creature in the world could have produced such a far-reaching influence on the mind of man.
Unlike the European dragon, it was considered a beneficent beast, until the Buddhists introduced the concept of evil dragons. Yet the basic belief was always that it had noble spiritual qualities that were unconquerable.
This book has been written by an author who has lived for many years in China researching into its history. It is in an easy-to-read style and is dedicated to the dragon and its many offshoots and variations. The pictures are delightful. It gives details of what a dragon was, where it was used, and what it was called. The reader will become more acquainted with the dragon, and will gain a greater understanding of this magnificent beast. It will interest and please the serious student and the enthusiastic Chinaphile alike.
It would make a perfect Christmas present.

An excellent source and a labour of love

This book, though short, provides a remarkably detailed survey of the Chinese dragon as represented in the art of his native land. Beginning with an overview of early dragon representations and possible sources of inspiration, Mr. Bates' book goes to considerable effort to describe the many variant images and beliefs that may be found regarding dragons throughout China. I have a hard time finding the kind of information brought together here - dragons in architecture, dragons as represented on dragon robes, the beings and images popularly represented as sons of the dragon - anywhere other than highly specialized scholarly tomes. Finding as much as Mr. Bates has put forth in Chinese Dragons in such an accessible volume is a remarkably pleasant surprise. The twenty-four colour plates are just about worth the price of admission all by themselves. The author clearly knows and loves his subject.

A 'provisional' 5 Stars...

...and here's why: This novella is actually two separate and complete stories/incidents in the introduction of the title character to the author's Double Helix universe. They involve her somewhat reluctant recruitment into the Mutant Affairs Council, a quasi governmental outfit charged with riding herd on the world's increasing numbers of paranormally talented citizens. Miriya is, herself, a powerful Alpha telepath, and the government wants her on their side. Being an independent sort, she is not keen on taking orders. The first story is the setup, plunking the reader down cold into the Double Helix world and jumping right into Mirya's recruitment as she is sucked in by a plea to help a friend. The story held me, but the transition to the second half was a little rough with only a few paragraphs explaining that seven months had gone by and her status as reluctant recruit had changed to full agent and Miriya was now 'on the job'. A little more explanation about the missing months would have left me more satisfied. Still,the second adventure was as enjoyable a read as the first, especially once I realized I was reading a teaser. Mind you, the two episodes are complete, though the second pulls in a lot of characters from the Double Helix universe and you are left wanting to find out more about it all as you are meant to.
.... So, why the 'provisional' rating if what you have here are two fine, five-star stories? Well, I read them while trapped in my tent during a rainy camping trip and was frustrated by my inability to get the full story, there being no internet access in the mountains. My frustration increased, when upon my return to civilization I learned that the character I had developed an interest in seems to be peripheral at best in the Double Helix epic. Maybe I am missing something, but when Miriya gets her own complete novel, I will be satisfied. Meanwhile, read 'Miriya'. It is certainly entertaining, especially at the price. :)

A story with heart

This story kept me involved with no problem of my mind straying. I had already read the book, Perfection Unleashed, so I found myself once again having read a book series in a backwards way. But its good to be able to say that it wasn't hard to read at all. Miriya just draws you in. She is a free wheeling, live by the seat of the pants, rule breaking survivor. Now, that might make you think that she is a harsh, uncaring woman but she's not. She has her own moral code but only lets herself have very few close friends. She can't afford to be on the grid of other people's attention. One group she definitely doesn't want to notice her is the Enforces of the Council, and the Mutant Affairs Council that they serve. She hates everything about the Council, hates that being on their grid could mean the loss of her freedom which she values so highly. She fears not only the loss of her freedom but also her privacy and individuality. As things begin to spike, she does develope some more friendships along the way, which was enjoyable.
I have to agree with a statement made about the Double Helix Book Set. Someone said that its, "Higher octane than Heroes. More heart than X-Men." That comes through loud and clear even in this Novella.

Short Novella in an apparent series.

I'm kind of on the fence about this story. On the one hand, I can envision the potential for a series, but as a Prequel type story, I felt like it was missing chapters. At one spot the Heroine was finally thinking that she might call the Council and consider working for them. Immediately after, she was apparently an established and experienced agent. I found myself turning back pages to see if I'd missed something.

Character development of the main characters was good, writing style is also good. The action scenes are well done. This book was really too short for me to get that involved with the plot, and the ending (?) felt a little rushed. Decent world building for a novella.

I think that the main series is already established, so maybe I would have enjoyed this book more if I'd already read those books. This book didn't really Wow me, but it was an OK read.

This is a very intriguing and interesting read. It is full of mystery and adventure and sexual content and tension. I definitely enjoyed this book and I already have the next three books in this series. I can't wait to finish them all. Easy reading and very intense. Five stars for sure.....

About the Author
Amy Young is a third generation Colorado native, and the fact that she leads with this tidbit shows her love of the random. After growing up in Colorado, she moved to Kansas to study and ended up staying because it is far more beautiful than many think. An excellent roadmap and manual for those of us in transition

Looming Transitions is an excellent roadmap and manual for those of us in transition. Amy is a gifted teacher and communicator, and her writing reflects her commitment to help us understand and walk through the transition process. Her passion is to help us, and it shines in the pages of this book. Looming Transitions takes difficult concepts and provides vivid word pictures, personal examples, and practical suggestions to help guide you through your own journey. Amy's encouragement to pay attention along the way, reminders that "the goal isn't to get the transition 'just right'," and that "your transition joins a larger story" are life giving nuggets of wisdom. You will benefit from this wisdom whether you are preparing to move overseas, changing roles where you live, or returning to your passport country for the foreseeable future. I wish we would have had this resource more than a year ago before we started our own transition back to the States after living many years overseas, but I'll keep Looming Transitions close at hand as we continue to resettle in our new location!

Love this book! Great insights

While written for those who are in ministry, I found the author's insights broader, applicable to everyone on the move. Making a smooth transition and the wake left behind--either good or bad--is inevitable. Tip the scales in the direction of a leaving a good wake. Learn from the author how to make the best transition you possibly can while also being kind to yourself and those around you. I wish this book had been available all those years ago when our family made some significant moves and didn't have a clue how to do it or how important the concepts in this book were--both for our sanity and for those in our wake.
I loved the author's sense of humor and self-deprecation as she wove personal stories to either give insight or to make a point. It is filled with practical advice and well worth the read if you're considering moving across state lines or across the ocean. This is a book that is sorely needed in our highly mobile society. Don't miss it!

Short and Super

My son loves these 5-minute super hero stories, and I must say I'm quite fond of them as well. You can't go wrong with a 5 minute story about superheroes. A lot of children's stories are either very weird, poorly drawn, or just ridiculous, at least these have some decent decent writing and illustrations that my son and I can relate to. It's pretty awesome as a Dad to watch your son discover his favorite super hero. I'd recommend them for any parent who is tired or reading the same old children's books I highly recommend giving these a shot...at least it's something different.

Very Nice Gift for Small Children

much nicer than i expected. i thought these were small 'Little Golden' style story books, but they are full sized books [8.5 inches by 11 inches], with a soft padded binding. they are also much longer than i expected. each book has nearly 200 pages, with about 12 stories in each. very nice.

Instead of a sensationalist, name-dropping page-turner, Alda writes about his life as a memory play, an exercise in recollecting his childhood, his parents (dad Robert was a veteran on stage, film, and vaudeville), and his career. You want to know about Alda's most famous work, the eleven years on M*A*S*H? You have exactly 16 pages to do so, and guess what: It's one of the least entertaining parts of the book. But should fans of the award-winning actor-writer-director avoid this slim memoir? Not in the slightest. Slyly humorous and open-hearted, Never Have Your Dog Stuffed is a breezy, most enjoyable read. He also shares details of the family's struggles with his mother's undiagnosed schizophrenia. Alda shows how he not only coped with these hurdles but also learned from them, as stories from his successful adult life round out the book. Refreshingly, this collection of biographical sketches is written in a good-natured and compassionate way. A great guy but a disappointing book.

Alan Alda has always been a hero of mine but I found the book rather disappointing. The feistiness of his personality, which I admire,
somehow doesn't come through. I really admire his loyalty to his wife and daughters and would have liked a little more on them.

Get your heart and soul stuffed!

My heart and soul were stuffed by his wonderful book. His ability to elicit immense laughter absent of personal presence was amazing. I burst out laughing on so many occasions! Truly a reflection of improv treasures he possesses, even as a writer. The depths of revelations of his personal life and acting struggles were especially interesting to read about...it was also like a treasure hunt in finding out about how history was made with MASH! Truly acts of God, and the strengths of a wonderful human spirit, were revealed in his work...and especially in finding out that his father was in MASH scenes, something I never knew! Basic introduction for Ichimoku (or Cloud Charts)

David Linton's Cloud Charts provides a good introduction for new traders seeking to learn more about Ichimoku (or Cloud Charts).

It is divided into 3 sections with a total of 16 chapters.

The first section (comprising of 7 chapters) deals with general Technical Analysis

The second section (comprising of 5 chapters) introduces the reader to Ichimoku

The last section (comprising of 3 chapters) discuss more about Advanced Cloud Chart Techniques.

For the experienced traders, it is possible to skip the first 7 chapters and head straight to the second section where it introduces the Ichimoku indicators, the constructions of the chart and the various signals for trading.

In my opinion, the author (David Linton) is able to depicts pretty clearly on the construction of the charts; how various Ichimoku indicators are constructed and how it is represented on Ichimoku.

As a trader, there are times where we choose to neglect the construction of the indicators. On hindsight, I am glad that the chapters reinforce my understanding of the charts and its possible implications when I am looking for support/resistance and the possible change in trend.

One important aspect of Ichimoku charts is the use of colours to differentiate different 'moving averages' and the change in cloud direction (or kumo twist). The book did not fall short in this area with all the charts in colour.

I believe this is an important part of Ichimoku. If the charts are in black and white, it would have fall short on the visual display and its ability to explain Ichimoku easily.

This book is not without negatives.

Like the book from Nicole Elliot, I find that it falls short in its explanation of 'wave', and 'timeframe' analysis.

In the chapter, Japanese Patterns Techniques, there are a few references to Hidenobu Sasaki's book. However, it is not able to go beyond that and highlight how a trader can benefit from it.

In the last section, the author attempts to mix Ichimoku with other indicators. It could have been improved by providing more in-depth examples and walking the reader through how a trade is executed. For example, a more detailed discussion on the setup of the trade and how at trader will anticipate the trade as it breakout while observing its interaction with other indicators will be more useful.

For traders new to Ichimoku, this book will be a good introduction. However, I do not think it will be the 'definitive' guide.

Great book if you're an Updata customer, but not so for others

I really hate to give this book a three star rating, as the author did a number of things trying to create an excellent book. However, sometimes great ideas and plans fall short in the end. That is the case with "Cloud Charts - Trading Success with the Ichimoku Technique".

I would like to start my review pointing out some of the good things about this book. First of all, the author is obviously a very intelligent, accomplished individual and has loads of ideas to explore. The author also happens to be the founder of Updata, and as such uses many colored Updata charts on heavy gauge paper. This in and of itself is impressive. The general binding of the book, and quality of construction makes it a book that will last a 100 years on a library bookshelf!

My complaints are unfortunately many. I hope the author will read these and take it as constructive criticism for the next edition:

1. As another reviewer has noted, there are quite a few misspelled words and poor grammar. This made several areas of the book a tough reading assignment, and difficult to understand. I found myself reading and re-reading a paragraph - then reading it out loud with corrections to get the meaning. To compound this point, the book is just not a fun book to read. I mean to say that it just doesn't flow nicely. It's like a hodgepodge of ideas all cut & pasted together. It pains me to make this critique, as there were nicely laid out "Parts 1, 2 & 3", with bullet point summarizations. It's a good read for someone who's after a bunch of ideas, but not for someone seeking deeper solid take-aways. It's like a collection of semi-related magazine articles organized into sections.

2. The author does not come out and directly advertise Updata, but many references to proprietary and/or unique features of this charting platform are made. This, in and of itself isn't so bad. However, to take time and vaugely show an indicator called "indexia", and say "here's an example of a proprietary indicator in TA", is not good. I as the reader am left hanging to go and find out what "indexia" is. The same can be said with things like the "heat map", "flip charts", and "optimized trailing stops". If I had an Updata platform, then I could spend time exploring the value of these. In all fairness the author provides a 30 day free trial to Updata (TraderPro). It's about $150/month after that if you want to keep it, along with realtime data.

3. As a buyer of this book, I was seeking to find out more about the the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo indicator itself. I have gone to free websites and already understood most of the basics, and was hoping to delve deeper into it's underlying meanings. The author instead has decided to combine Western TA techniques, and a collection of other ideas to get more meaning out of the indicator. This exercise for me ended up being a whole bunch of disconnected ideas to explore - with the implied use of Updata TraderPro.

4. Just a little over 50% of the entire book (Part 1), was dedicated to classical Western TA. In my opinion, this was way too much surface information to help the beginner, and way to generalized for the experienced trader. I consider myself to be in the former group, and was somewhat irritated wading through this filler material. I will say that the section on Point & Figure, and candlesticks was somewhat interesting. In fact, maybe the author should have just focused on these. As another suggestion, eliminate most of the TA material and expand on money management - that's where the money is made isn't it??

Don't get me wrong, I think this book has value. I however don't have TraderPro and just wanted to learn more about Ichimoku. My goal is to make money, not to play with endless variations on technical analysis. I will say that I did pick up a couple interesting points in this book, and reinforced some notions I've developed on my own. Even with a three star rating, it's not a bad book to have around in it's current form, but waiting for the next edition would be advised. If you have Updata TraderPro, then maybe this book gets a four star rating.

My introduction to Ichimoku charts was at the 1997 IFTA conference held in Sydney. During a conversation with Dan Gramza, from Chicago, who teaches the Japanese Candlestick method, and members of the Japanese contingent, Dan steered the discussion to Ichimoku. I thought to myself `What was that? Itchy what? Ah, Ichimoku, that Japanese method steeped in mystique'. Our Japanese colleagues did their best to explain but found it very difficult to do so in a quick informal chat. Intrigued by the encounter, I went off searching for anything I could find about Ichimoku, with little immediate success. Over the years, there have been only a few works which have made their way to English translation and a few written by Western converts.

David Linton, the author of Cloud Charts, had his interest in Ichimoku charts `sparked' during a presentation by Rick Bensignor at the 2004 IFTA conference in Madrid. David had heard of the method prior to the conference but credits Rick with presenting it in an `understable' way. David set out on a quest for Ichimoku knowledge. He researched the internet, questioned Japanese delegates at subsequent IFTA conferences, sought out Rick Bensignor at conferences and meetings and even flew to Tokyo. The fruit of that quest is the book, Cloud Charts.

The Ichimoku method is now fast becoming popular in Western trading rooms and is available on almost all technical analysis software. David must take some credit for turning what seemed to be an exotic and complicated method into an easily understandable and robust trading and analysis tool for non-Japanese speaking technical analysts.

So, what is Ichimoku? The full name of the method is Ichimoku Kinko Hyo which means `at one glance balance bar chart'. Ichimoku charts were devised by Goichi Hosoda , a Tokyo journalist, who believed that once the method was fully understood, one could comprehend the exact state of a market at a glance. Most of the Ichimoku indicators represent equilibrium in one time frame or another and price action is generally analysed with regard to whether the market is in equilibrium, moving away from it or reverting back to it. By their nature, the various indicators also offer dynamic areas of support or resistance.

Cloud Charts is divided into three parts. The first is for the novice technical analyst and is designed to give them an understanding of many basic technical analysis concepts involved with not only Ichimoku analysis but also traditional techniques. More experienced technical analysts may wish to skip this part.

Part two introduces the reader to the basic indicators used in Ichimoku charts (David calls them cloud charts). This section deals with the derivation and interpretation of:
1. The Turning Line (also called the Conversion Line)
2. The Standard Line ( also called the Base Line)
3. The Cloud Span A ( also called the Cloud Span 1)
4. The Cloud Span B (also called the Cloud Span 2)
5. The Lagging Line ( also called the Lagging Span)

Part two offers a guide to applying Ichimoku charts in a multiple time frame sense, as well as the often overlooked Wave Principle, Price Targets and Time Span Principle. However, the application of Ichimoku charts to price and time projection is very subjective and for that reason alone the projections are quite often not utilised by even experienced analysts.

Looking at an Ichimoku chart, it's no surprise that analysts are sometimes turned off by the busyness of the chart. It can look like chaos to the uninitiated but the key to getting past that is understanding the formula to each indicator, how they combine with each other, how they represent a consensus of price action in different time frames and colour-coding. In part two David explains construction and interpretation of the charts in a manner that is easy for any newcomer to technical analysis let alone a professional on a trading desk.

Part three, my favourite part of the book, is where we are encouraged to think outside of the box. Here, the use of Ichimoku charts are combined with other technical analysis techniques, alternative time inputs into the indicators are suggested and the application to market breadth analysis is considered. There is also a chapter on back testing for the quantitative traders to consume.

Overall, this book, in an easily read manner, brings together the body of knowledge of a Japanese technical analysis method which was once thought of as exotic and over-complicated. It has potential to become the definitive English language text on the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo technical analysis method.
