This is a wonderful way to enhance your vocabulary. The two people who do the voices are fun to listen too. I listen while I drive in traffic and I have really been impacted by the new knowledge of words! It makes such a difference when conversing, having a larger vocabulary.

Fun to read but super short

The "book" is composed by 3 essays. The first one is the longest while the second one is the shortest (about 1.5 pages). While the first two essays are really fun to read and I could relate very well to them, i felt the third one was just a repetition of the ideas already written in the first ones. I just felt it to be kind of a filler.

When I finished I just wanted it to be longer and talk about other topics that men encounter throughout their lives. If you want to spend 3 bucks for a 20min reading go ahead but I think there would be lengthier readings for the same price.

With a juicy title and a black cover I thought I was buying something scandalous. While I did enjoy reading the book because it was so relatable and funny, I felt like it was any article I read for free on thought catalog. THE Classic Book On Blackjack

I totally disagree with the other reviewers who say this book is "no longer relevant". It is the definitive guide to Blackjack's "Basic Strategy" plus provides a fascinating historical perspective on how Thorp ran the computer simulations to develop the Basic Strategy and test it in Nevada casinos back in the early '60's. What the other reviewers say is true, that the methods Thorp used (card counting) to make a lot of money back in the '60's no longer work today, but that doesn't diminish the value of the book. The casinos were changing the rules and "shutting down" the big opportunities before Thorp even finished the book. But that isn't the measure of the value of the book (although it is testimony to how powerful Thorps's insights were when first developed).
Everyone playing Blackjack (one deck or out of a shoe) should be playing "Basic Strategy" at a minimum. If you want to implement some other strategy on top of that (changing bet size, card counting, etc. etc.) have at it. But the starting point should be Basic Strategy.
Furthermore, the average recreational Blackjack player should be playing Basic Strategy, but many (most? -- at the cheaper tables anyway) don't as you can observe by sitting down at any Blackjack table.
This book should be read by anyone who wants to play Blackjack.

Still the best!

This is the definitive guide to Blackjack Basic Strategy and the history of card counting. I really don't think there is another book other there with clarity and depth, its not wonder it started a revolution. People who are crazy enough to dismiss this book for its age don't realize how fascinating the history is or how relevant his strategies still are today. In fact, I'm always surprised by how few people at blackjack tables know the basic strategy - although I'm happy to have the advantage.

Thorp's breakthrough insight to casino completely changed the game, and I enjoy reading about him. Just recently someone published an early book of his that looks like a doctoral thesis, which I recommend to fellow number junkies out there. We bought his first book as soon as it arrived hot of the press in our local book store and were barely old enough to get in a casino at the time. After we bought the book we spent a couple of months practicing and then headed for Nevada and we probably played regularly after that for a couple of years. Then over the years, through the 70s, 80s, and 90s, I would play now and then when my wife and I would go there on vacation.

Because there are easier systems and more efficient systems available now days, Thorpe's book is mostly only useful as historical background and theory, etc. HOWEVER,the following chapter is probably worth its weight in gold for some potential gamblers:

10. How to Spot Cheating

Over the years, from the time I started in the early 60s through the 70s, 80s, and 90s, I found the ability to spot cheating was the most important skill of all. In fact, shortly after first arriving in Las Vegas in the early 60s, I was able to spot a second from 20 or 30 feet away. Then, in later years, just out of curiosity, I created a small chart and card counting system based on a formula I found in Thorpe's "Mathematics of Gambling" that would calculate the probabilities of clumping with multiple decks. Then on one vacation trip, while the wife was playing the slots, I would watch and count and then go to an inconspicuous location and record the results for various tables and casinos. The results were very interesting.

Card counting systems are highly effective, in theory, at winning a lot of money at Blackjack. Note, however, that I said "in theory". If you want to know how effective they are in practice,though, ask yourself why Thorpe actually made almost all of his money from the sale of his book and stock market investing. As I recall, Thorpe even made money at one time as a paid casino consultant, but I doubt if he ever made much money at actually playing the game.

The book by Dr. Abdul Rahman, published by academically-prominent Wiley, is infinitely more than a mere textbook. Rather, it is a keenly felt-through and expertly written guide to understanding, building, and maintaining a truly socially-conscious, sound, and profitable financial structure. Though titled "The Art of Islamic Banking and Finance," the Dr. Abdul Rahman's work transcends faiths and schisms as the financial tools and banking products developed by Islamic scholars are as beneficial to Jewish, Christian, Hindu, or fiercely atheist communities as to societies adhering to Shariah principles.

Yes, indubitably, the volume is of the highest academic value: business and finance students will find the material in the book laid out in the clear and cohesive manner that will help them to gradually build a solid understanding of not just the Islamic Finance, but the common banking industry in general. For those who find the current landscape in Islamic Banking & Finance fraught with confusion and contradictions, this excellent book clears the air. It is a fundamental handbook on the setup, operations, and religious dictums of an Islamic financial institution written by a highly respected authority in this field. Dr. Rahman brings a unique perspective to the task of highlighting the shortcomings of the current financial products offered by some Islamic banks worldwide and the unique financial services offered by LARIBA. Unlike other textbooks, the author is a leading banker, a pioneering practitioner, and one who has experienced first hand the difficulties of establishing an Islamic Bank operating side-by-side and competing effectively with conventional institutions. It is filled with solutions to problems faced by a typical bank, what pitfalls to avoid, and what measures are required to make an Islamic financial institution succeed.

If you find the present global financial crisis too perplexing, and mired with conflicting signals, this excellent books clears the air. Dr. Rahman's writing style is fluid and his command of the material is impressive. Like most great authors and thinkers, he will have you challenging your present views and investment positions. Just completed reading the book. Technical details about Interest-free banking were very revealing and useful.

Authors personal experience in Texas real estate was interesting. Similarities of Judeo-Islamic values in financing was interesting. The book also tries to explains how paper money, reselling of mortgages, and hyper speculations in market creates economic bubbles. The comparison of Al Azhar and South Asian opinions on Islamic financing was interesting. I guess partial credit of Malaysians success in Islamic financing goes to Al Azhar school. This book is a good read

STEVEN COHEN is the executive director and chief operating officer of the Earth Institute, and professor in the practice of public affairs at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs.

WILLIAM EIMICKE is a professor in the Practice of international and public affairs and the founding director of the Picker Center for Executive Education at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs.

ALISON MILLER is deputy executive director of the Earth Institute, Columbia University and the associate director of the Research Program on Sustainability Policy and Management at the Earth Institute.

The necessary role for public policy in moving us to a more sustainable world

Cohen, Eimicke and Miller articulate the roles that federal, state and local governments can play in moving us to a more sustainable economy. Many examples of this are given throughout the book.

The authors refute the claim that doing well for the environment is a zero sum game relative to the economy and show that we can do well for both at the same time as policies that benefit the environment (and society) can also be good for the economy (aka the "Triple Bottom Line"). They also show that it is unsustainable to have polices that favor the economy at the expense of the environment and society.

The state of sustainability reporting and the challenges faced in the various ongoing efforts to standardize and make them relevant are also discussed.

The book also discusses the politics of sustainability policy, from why there are roles for government that only they can do best to why the US has had a less than smooth political path towards the implementation of polices that promote sustainability.

The book is well written, does not at all assume a specialist's level of knowledge to understand and is IMO quite mainstream and realistic in the views expressed.

Full disclosure: I know one of the authors (Cohen) and while he is aware that I have purchased this book (at a public book launching event where he autographed my copy of the book after I purchased it), he does not know that I am writing this review nor did he ask or have reason to expect that I would.
