About the Author
Frank C. Keil is the Charles C. and Dorathea S. Dilley Professor of Psychology and Professor of Linguistics and chair of the Psychology Department at Yale University. Keil received his B.S. in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973, an M.A. in Psychology from Stanford University in 1975, and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977. He was a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at Cornell University from 1977 to 1998 and has been at Yale since 1998. For over 35 years, he has taught an undergraduate lecture course in developmental psychology as well as advanced seminars at the undergraduate and graduate levels on topics in cognitive development and cognition. Keil has published extensively on topics concerned with many areas in the development of cognition and language. He has written two books on aspects of conceptual development, and he and Robert Wilson have edited the MIT Encyclopedia of the Cognitive Sciences, which was selected as the Outstanding Book in Psychology by the Association of American Publishers. Keil has served as president of the Society for Philosophy and Psychology and has received numerous awards for his scholarship, including the Boyd R. McCandless Award from the American Psychological Association (Developmental Psychology), the Distinguished Scientific Award for an Early Career Contribution to Psychology from the American Psychological Association, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, a MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health, and the Ann L. Brown Award for Excellence in Developmental Research. Keil has served on the Board on Science Education for the National Academy of Sciences, the McDonnell Foundation Advisory Board on Brain and Cognition, and numerous other boards and committees for government agencies and foundations. He also served as Master of Morse College at Yale University from 2001-2012. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Keil, and his wife Kristi Lockhart, a clinical and developmental psychologist, are parents of three sons who are now in their twenties and thirties.

Good book but source code is not quite right

It seems like Charles Petzold wrote code for this book then memorized it then dictated it to monkeys who then typed it in. Okay, it's not that bad, but source code in a book should really be copied from a program that compiles and runs. The Data attribute to the Path element in the clock code, for example, has commas in the wrong places and will not compile. Other that that minor complaint, the book is good and covered all of the things that I needed.

If you type in the code from the book, expect to get errors.

Apps are more than UI

I have to take exception to the glowing reviews of this book. While it demonstrates Petzold's formidable command of Windows 8 UI programming, this book doesn't really tell you what you need to know to write commercially successful apps. The majority of this book's 1136 pages consist of Petzold rambling on about topics that he, himself, finds interesting: font pitch, pixel placement, obscure XAML attributes.

In some sense, the book is trapped in a 1990 model of software development.

So what's missing?

- No real discussion of tying an app to Cloud services, other than a cut-and-paste sample using Bing maps. These days, most real apps are integrated with some kind of web or Cloud service. Gone are the days when an app was just a standalone component running on the desktop.

- Along those same lines, no discussion of how to approach multi-platform issues. Sure, it's a Windows book, but most real apps have iOS and Android versions, too. Is there some design or engineering strategy I can use to maximize the reuse of resources? This book assumes that Windows is the only environment in the world.

- Almost no mention of the app capabilities model. Basically, Petzold throws in descriptions of any capabilities needed by one of his example programs. ("Remember to set the BLAH capability if you want this to run.") Choosing the proper, minimal set of capabilities for your app is a big deal.

- Not much discussion of performance. A little bit of generic advice ("use non-UI threads for heavy computation"), but nothing substantive about designing apps for good performance under Windows 8.

- Very little about non-UI Win RT object classes. The Win RT API surface is quite large and interesting, yet this book focuses almost exclusively on UI programming issues.

- Nothing about monetization: In-app purchases, the dangers/benefits of ad-based apps.

This book is a good secondary reference if you're writing an app that's graphically "adventurous" -- something that's pushing the bounds of the UI that Visual Studio can produce on its own. But don't be misled into thinking that this book will give you what you need in order to write successful apps for Windows 8.

Defective C++ code samples

The book itself seems to be OK (I haven't read more than a couple of chapters). The reason I'm downgrading it is that the C++ code samples do not build with Visual Studio Professional 2015 on Windows 10, due to a missing file App.g.h. It is not acceptable to have code samples that do not build.

About the Author
Thi Bui was born in Vietnam and immigrated to the United States as a child. She studied art and law and thought about becoming a civil rights lawyer, but became a public school teacher instead. Bui lives in Berkeley, California, with her son, her husband, and her mother. The Best We Could Do is her debut graphic novel.

Beautiful Book

Over the past few years, I've read a lot of books that were profound, evocative, and embedded themselves in me emotionally (most recently it was "Between the World and Me"). But this book actually made me cry, like ugly-cry. This book is beautifully illustrated (it recalls the style of "Blankets" by Craig Thompson), a bit sparse stylistically for its own effect. It touches on the darkest parts of what it means to survive, not just as an immigrant, but from our own trauma, experienced or passed down to the next generation. It speaks of redemptions, but carefully navigates that line of profundity without overwrought sentimentalism. I would lend this book to everyone if I wasn't afraid of never getting it back.

This tale is absolutely beautiful. The illustrations are hypnotic and ethereal. The narrative is compelling and harrowing; In places heart-rending. Yet ultimately uplifting. This is as great as visual storytelling gets. The best book I've read since Will Eisner's "Dropsie Avenue Chronicles".

Good read and has given me historical perspective of the 2 wars Vietnam has gone through before it's independence. Everything is drawn and it leaves a calming feeling that my parent's history as a refugee will not be forgotten. Loved it

About the Author
Elisabeth is twenty-four years old. She was born Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Africa. After being raised in Bridgeport and West Haven, CT, she moved to Ottawa, ON, CA when she was sixteen. She has seven siblings; five sisters and two brothers of which she is number five. She started writing in the third grade but never showed anyone. Currently residing in Ottawa, she is in the Human Relations Bachelor Honors Program, with a minor in Conflict Studies, at Saint Paul University and Ottawa University. She plans on graduating in April 2016 and going to medical school focusing on psychiatry.

I can't wait for part 3. I loved the relationship between Nico and Gabriel and even though Matty sometimes felt jealous it was never in a suspicious way and he never got between them. I hope to see ALL the characters in the new book but I'm hoping to see that Alpha male Moretti come out and take care of business. Women and children are supposed to be off limits. Great read!!!

I tried y'all...I tried desperately to get into this book...
I should've stayed with my first instinct....after a long avoidance of book 1 and all the less than stellar reviews....I decided to get both books...and now I know better..the lead female character Nico comes off spoiled,over indulgent,bratty and very immature...it seems her male counterpart Matthew comes off as the mature and responsible husband and father...she pouts and whines and have meltdowns at the drop of a hat...constantly behaving outrageously with other men and especially with her husband's brother....I fast forwarded to the end and to my delight she got shot....finally.....I could not take one more word from her mouth....I am definitely not looking forward to a part 3 ...it's a shame though...I really hoped this author was going to improve on her story telling....it feels like bits and pieces from similar well written stories.....too bad

This was better than the 1st. Loved the storyline and the ending was shocking and can't wait to find out what happens next. It was a few flaws as for the details, you told me what they were wearing are how they looked on one page, and turned around and told me again on another page. I did not need to know what they were wearing on every other page. That would be my only critique but I did love the storyline and can't wait for the next, hope it's not a long wait especially after the shocking ending.

I wish every Christian would read this book, especially those against or unsure of psychology.

I am so thankful for and impressed with this book. I have been struggling over the issue of psychology and how to integrate it with Christianity for a long time, and this finally answers the question for me. I was prompted to look for this book after a not-so-great experience my husband and I had with "biblical counselors". It all felt wrong, but they were obviously Bible-centered and cared about helping us, so we tried. It just never felt like they were really listening, but instead just giving directives and exhortations, though in a loving way. They claimed that their method was the only biblical way, and that their method contrasts with the "humanist/secular psychology" in that they want real heart change, not just behavior modification. Since I had been in good, Christian therapy before, I knew that it wasn't just about behavior modification, but about real change through relationship. This book has helped me put real understanding and deep thought behind my feelings and experiences with these counselors, and helped me grow and fall even more in love with Jesus- the true counselor who does sit with us and love us in our weaknesses, and who is the only complete Fulfiller of all our needs. If you have strong opinions against Christian-integrated therapy, I challenge you to read this book with an open mind. Even if you don't agree with the conclusion, at least you will have a better understanding of how strong, Bible-believing Christians fully believe in using the tools and research from psychology to more effectively help people who are seriously hurting.

The Best Basis for a Knowledge of Econometrics

I have been a practicing econometrician for a total of about eighteen years in American industry (starting in 1980). I used an earlier version of Johnston in graduate school. The book of Johnston et al is, in my view, the very best place to start studying econometrics, and a great place to return to. As a practitioner, I know how valuable this book truly is. There are others of its ilk, but this one book will give the reader a very solid foundation in econometrics. In my experience, this is the bedrock on which my knowledge of econometrics rests.

It all goes down to academics Vs. real life!

This book is great if you are willing to pursue a career in the academics, i.e. you want to be a researcher with a decent and strong background in applied methods.
If, like me, you just got into a graduate (or undergraduate) program trying to learn and understand the basics necessary for a job out there, this book will be your nightmare. Go for Gujarati instead, or anything else more focused on time-series or panel data, whatever you're more interested in.

I no way diminishing the book, which, as everyone else pointed out already, it's great. But for us average joes who just happened to get into economics (Applied Economist myself... oh! the irony!) because we find it thrilling, challenging, but not enough to become phd's, then you'll end up hating this book!
