In the process, Encarnacao reviews the literature on folk and punk to argue that tropes of authenticity, though constructions, carry considerable power in the creation and reception of recorded works. New approaches to music require new analytical tools, and through the analysis of some 50 albums, Encarnacao introduces the categories of labyrinth, immersive and montage forms. This book makes a compelling argument for a reconsideration of popular music history that highlights the eternal compulsion for spontaneous, imperfect and performative recorded artefacts.

About the Author

Jeanne H. Ballantine (far right) is University Professor of Sociology (emeriti) at Wright State University, a state university of about 17,000 students in Ohio. She has also taught at several 4-year colleges, including an “alternative” college and a traditionally Black college, and at international programs in universities abroad. She has been teaching introductory sociology for more than 30 years with a mission to introduce the uninitiated to the field and to help students see the usefulness and value in sociology. She has been active in the teaching movement, shaping curriculum, writing and presenting research on teaching, and offering workshops and consulting in regional, national, and international forums. She is a Fulbright Specialist Scholar and serves as a Departmental Resources Group consultant and evaluator. Jeanne has written several textbooks, all with the goal of reaching the student audience. As the original director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Wright State University, she scoured the literature on student learning and served as a mentor to teachers in a wide variety of disciplines. Local, regional, and national organizations have honored her for her teaching and for her contributions to helping others become effective teachers. In 1986, the American Sociological Association’s Section on Undergraduate Education (now called the Section on Teaching and Learning in Sociology) recognized her with the Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching of Sociology. In 2004, she was honored by the American Sociological Association with its Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award. In 2010, the North Central Sociological Association awarded her the J. Milton Yinger Award for Distinguished Career in Sociology.

Keith A. Roberts is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Hanover College, a private liberal arts college of about 1,100 students in Indiana. He has been teaching introductory sociology for more than 30 years with a passion for active learning strategies and a focus on “deep learning” by students that transforms the way they see the world. Prior to teaching at Hanover, he taught at a 2-year regional campus of a large university. He has been active in the teaching movement, writing on teaching and serving as a consultant to sociology departments across the country in his capacity as a member of the American Sociological Association Departmental Resources Group. He has written a very popular textbook in the sociology of religion, has coauthored a book on writing in the undergraduate curriculum, and for 22 years ran an annual workshop for high school sociology teachers. He has chaired the Selection Committee for the SAGE Innovations and Professional Development Awards since the program’s inception. He has been honored for his teaching and teaching-related work at local, state, regional, and national levels. The American Sociological Association’s Section on Teaching and Learning awarded him the Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching of Sociology in 2000. He was honored with the American Sociological Association’s Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award in 2010. In 2012, the North Central Sociological Association awarded Keith the J. Milton Yinger Award for Distinguished Career in Sociology.

Kathleen Odell Korgen is a professor of sociology at William Paterson University, a comprehensive university in Wayne, New Jersey. Kathleen has co-authored or co-edited numerous books that teach students to use the sociological tools they gain in their classes and to find inspiration from public sociologists and fellow sociology students. These books include The Engaged Sociologist: Connecting the Classroom to the Community, Sociologists in Action: Sociology, Social Change, and Social Justice and Sociologists in Action on Inequalities: Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality. She has also written or edited the following books on race relations and racial identity: Race Policy and Multiracial Americans (forthcoming), Multiracial Americans and Social Class, Crossing the Racial Divide: Close Friendships Between Black and White Americans, and From Black to Biracial: Transforming Racial Identity Among Americans. Kathleen works as a consultant for other sociology departments as a member of the Departmental Resources Group of the American Sociological Association. She has received William Paterson University’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship/Creative Expression and the university’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Interesting read that is broken down easily to absorb

It's a really easy read; the authors considered their audiences and translated text language into relatable language. It is definitely not as dry as other texts and the little examples help a lot regarding understanding concepts and making sense of our lives. It's basically terminology for our everyday lives put into a textbook. Definitely an informative read. I had to read this for my sociology class and enjoyed it very much.

Reason for one star: I ordered a new book. When I received the book there was some residue on the cover that I cannot get off and some of the pages were stuck together. I don't care if the book has never been read, if I ordered a new book I am expecting pristine condition. This book was a rather pricey buy so I'm expecting no flaws. Amazon took care of my concerns and did phenomenally in resolving the issue. But this has been an issue I've been experiencing lately with Amazon's books. Stains on covers really irk me when I know I chose to pay more for "new" instead of "very good" condition.

If you thought this was just another book about crystals, think again! Not only is the author an experienced magical practitioner in her own right, but her magical tutor also held a doctorate in geology – and it shows. Not just in the obvious love of the subject but in the vast store of magical information crammed into these 186 pages. Of course there is the usual list of gemstones with their correspondences but Magic Crystals, Sacred Stones goes much further in explaining that it can be the very rocks beneath our feet that generates magical energy – and how it can affect our own magical working. Did you know, for example, that many of the stones used in our ancient monuments contain a high percentage of quartz; and that quartz is the most magically potent crystal on the planet? Another interesting aspect to this book is that the exercises at the end of each chapter are designed for the purpose of creating your own personal system of divination by crystallomancy, the ancient practice of casting lots using small stones or crystals. As well as being a practical magical guide, it is a worthy successor to those two classic historical reference works The Curious Lore of Precious Stones (Kunz) and Magical Jewels (Evans).

Earth energies in your hand

This is a really interesting book, bringing far more weight to the subject of crystals than is normal for New Age fayre. There’s a hefty reference section with more technical information than esoteric, and as a Druid, this really appeals to me. I’m wary of dogmatic spiritual interpretations of things, but going in depth on the tangible aspects we might easily agree on, and then using that as a basis for personal exploration seems like a much better idea to me. I was also very taken with the emphasis Melusine Draco places on relating to the rocks beneath your feet. Knowing what you are stood on, where that comes from and what it means is a way of connecting with the earth, and the massive time scales of geology are a useful counter-perspective for human issues. If you are working with earth energies or crystals, or want to work with personally sourced stones, there’s a lot to be gained from reading this book.

The author, an heir to a Traditional Witchcraft Coven dating to the mid-nineteenth century, would be at home in a Circle or a university lecture hall. This book is as much an exposition of the mysteries of Witchcraft, and the witch’s treasures in the earth, as it is a guide to geology. If you’re looking for a crystals-of-Atlantis or some other kind of New Age nonsense fluff, this is not the book for you. If you want solid, tried and tested knowledge that will aid your practice, make you think, and challenge you to do the spade-and-shovel work of real Witchcraft, this is what you’ve been looking for. Carl Sagan called geology the “study of time and pressure.” Melusine Draco has expanded that science to include Witchcraft in a way that is elegant and disciplined. This book is a “must have” for any student of the Nameless Art.
