He is the author of Oxygen: The Molecule that Made the World and his writings have appeared in numerous scientific publications, including Scientific American, The Lancet, and the British Medical Journal. He lives in the UK.

Now, I truly am in love with biochemistry.

[[VIDEOID:659c2f070076155042e3abd6c5afdbc5]] I went into this book assuming I was going to learn a lot about mitochondria given that it's a 300+ page book written by a biochemist. That definitely did happen. But what I wasn't expecting was such a rich dive into the history and culture of the science and scientists behind all these discoveries.

This was a complete journey through the scientific discoveries related to mitochondria and their vital role in the evolution of eukaryotes. Nick Lane brought up historical events within the scientific community, went over basic biochemistry, and gave his views on a number of occasions. In my opinion, it is layperson friendly - even though it gets deep into the science, Nick doesn't get too technical but does explain everything so clearly. Remembering some of the basics from biology and chemistry is all that's needed to enjoy this book.

This book was a life changing experience for me not because I learned a lot, which I did, but because of the sheer passion that Nick has for discovering the origins of complex, intelligent life.

There is more to it than natural selection

While the author may not have all the answers, the questions he asks are right on, and he makes a very good attempt at answering them. Questions like: Why don't bacteria get any larger? How did organized cell suicide (apoptosis) evolve in multi-celled organisms. Why do multi-celled organisms reproduce sexually? Why do we die of old age?

Bacteria/Mitocohonria/Cloroplasts are all limited in size by the physical properties of how they generate energy: the proton pump. Mitochondria must have their own DNA. So evolution in eukaryotes is a symbiotic tension between the nucleus and the mitochondria.

All this stuff was new to me and I found it fascinating. One area I would like to find out more about is why mitochondria must have their own DNA. The author's argument is that the mitochondria need DNA in order to rapidly respond to problems in the reparation chain. Since there are many mitochondria in a cell and only one nucleus, the nucleus is too centralized to deal with different problems in each individual mitochondria. This explanation to me seems somewhat wanting. Seems like if there were a way for the DNA to be centralized in the nucleus, nature would have done it, even if was complicated.

One of the very best biology books

This is an earlier book (2005) by the author of "Life Ascending" (2009). I read it because I liked "Life Ascending" so much. This one expands on the role of mitochondria, and is full of amazing stuff I didn't know. I read a lot of biology, evolution, and genetics and this is definitely one of the very best. Lane keeps up with the very latest research, which I wouldn't be able to understand, and weaves it into a coherent story of our best current understanding of what life is and how it works. Highest recommendation. I have just started reading his even earlier book "Oxygen" (2002).

Best book on the topic

This is quite a remarkable book about designing products and environments for children aged 3 to mid-teens. The scope covers topics from physiology on through a broad range of topics including children and injuries, warnings for children of different ages, the design of schools, playgrounds, farms and even cities and communities. I was astonished at the high caliber content, which was written for the layman as well as the practitioner but lists the information in compact forms - much of the 1,000 pages is in tables, charts and graphics. Really nothing like it. JH.

With Old Cairo as the back drop, the story unfolds with the sepia-tinted aura of early 20th century British imperialism, to it the author added the intrigue of the criminal world and then embellished with the poetic story telling reminiscent of Sheherazade's. The end result is a seduction of a young man not just by sweet words but also by forceful vigor. Well-written and so very enjoyable, it deserves a place among the ebooks.

Nick Greaves was born and educated in England, where he studied geology and environmental sciences before leaving to work in southern Africa. His work as a geologist took him to many of the remote and unspoiled regions of South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. There he developed a lasting fascination for the wildlife and its varied, often fragile habitat. He now lives in Zimbabwe.

Book arrived in perfect condition but I wanted to use it with 4th and 5th grade students. It's a little too hard and inappropriate, with references to alcohol and such. An interesting collection for personal interest though.
