About the Author
Barbara Creed is an associate professor of cinema studies in the school of fine arts at the University of Melbourne. A well-known film critic and media commentator, she has been the Age film reviewer for three years and an ABC film critic for the past decade. She is the author of The Monstrous-Feminine and the coeditor of both Body Trade and Don't Shoot Darling! Her work has been widely published in international journals such as Camera Obscura, New Formations, and Screen.

An intriguing look at horror film

Those who dislike psychoanalytic interpretations beware! This book is full of them (even one about Little Red Riding Hood!) I don't necessarily agree with them, but I do find them exceptionally fascinating. The readings of Psycho and Carrie are particularly enlightening, as well as that of Jaws (very heavy on the Freudian castration anxiety angle... but now when I watch the film I can't abide by any other interpretation).

Anyone interested in horror films and/or feminist theory MUST read this book. It is surprisingly accessible and enjoyable to read. Lower level undergrads without a cursory knowledge of feminist critiques of psychoanalysis might benefit from buying Elizabeth Wright'a Feminism and Psychoanalysis: A Critical Dictionary.

The arguments are underpinned with sound feminist theory and semiotics..very interesting to see a different perspective on well known films; it encourages more in depth critical readings of popular texts, and certainly stimulates discussion. I found the discussions of both Alien and Psycho especially, of interest.

This was a good book. I read it in a day, while resting from bad head cold. I did not want it to be over when I reached the end.

chic-lit mystery

Mina Calvi inherited a software company after her mother's death, but with no head for business, attempts to off-load the company with the help of her attorney Adams. While waiting for the deal to go though, Mina helps out a friend, Ginger, by agreeing to take her place at a local nightclub, Bosom Bodies.
All dressed up with a wig and padded bra, Mina pulls off the transformation, as Ginger had yet to start the job, running off to Vegas to get married at the last moment. Only Barbara the manager was in on the trick. Mina had time on her hands as her boyfriend was traveling in Europe with his mother, so the distraction was timely and she welcomed the chance to help a friend.
When Barbara suddenly dies, and Mina's Volkswagen is apparently involved in the hit-and-run, the joke she was helping perpetrate suddenly gets out of hand and Mina finds herself in the middle of a mob battle with crooked cops, diamond smuggling, and murder. Add to that a mysterious new neighbor who is a detective with one of the Federal agencies and Mina finds herself in over her head and overwhelmed with seduction. Clueless as ever, Mina stumbles and bumbles through this second-in-a-series chic-lit mystery, witlessly providing proof for the police to follow at every turn.

Still thinking about these characters hours later

This is the kind of book I truly love, the kind that keeps me and the protagonist guessing all along, one where I don't figure out "whodunnit" until the character has her epiphany, and most of all, leaves me daydreaming long after about the future these characters could be living. Brava!

In addition to Race for the Iron Throne, Steven is also a co-podcaster on Game of Thrones at the Lawyers, Guns, and Money podcast, writes about public policy at the Realignment Project, and is a co-author of the Tower of the Hand: A Hymn for Spring anthology book.

Must Read!

I got this book through the Kickstarter fund. Dr. Attewell thrives at the intersection of history, fantasy, and economics. Hands, Kings, and City-States will give you a greater appreciation for institutional power in ASOAIF. After reading these essays, I had even more respect for Tyrion's political mind and a clearer picture of his downfalls. The same is true for Eddard. I've never been really interested in Essos or the city states b/c it's so far away from the action. However, I was drawn into their vivid economic histories and Steven's analysis of their slave states and governments provided new insight.

Dr. Attewell is one of the most thoughtful and prolific writers in the fandom. He is at the top of most people's recommendation list, and often answers complicated questions on behalf of other writers. His place is well earned, and this set of essays adds to that extensive collection. This is definitely worth your time!

If You Want to go Further Than Just Reading

I usually take a book in the Fantasy/Action/Adventure genre and read it, then stick it on a shelf. Dr. Attewell studies them. Then he writes about them. His essays have taken me through the "Song of Ice and Fire" books three times now. On reading them again, armed with a collection of his essays, I discovered things that I hadn't noticed before. I also found myself talking and writing about those newly discovered things with friends.

In short, it helps me to feel less like a fanboy, and more like a student or some other more serious type of consumer.

Great insight and analysis as usual from Attewell for history/politics buffs or anyone who has ever wondered how something in the series would work in the real world. I've learned a great deal from his writing and it's enriched my experience of ASOIAF immensely.

For anybody that already is a stop motion animator

This may not be exactly a "Stop-Motion for Dummies" book. And it most definately isn't an introduction to the world of stop-motion either. It's much more of an "insider" book, from the hands of one of the greater stop-motion artists of our time. It shares experiences, holds more information about the medium than any book i've encountered so far, and all it really does is make me a better animator. I'm a happy camper!

Passion being the key word!

I've got pretty much all the stopmotion books in print, and this one is really something else entirely. It's not a text, not a beginner's lesson book and not just an appreciation for the art form (and, as Mr. Purves proves, it really IS an artform). Rather it's a very passionate reflection on the creative process of making stopmotion, and on the larger aspects of creativity in general. Barry is one of the best among animators.... and has frequently been writer and director of his own films, resulting in some of the most startling and original animation to date (such as his brilliant Achilles or my favorite Rigoletto). He expounds with great articulateness and intelligence on the strengths and weaknesses of the various forms of animation, revealing his obvious love for stopmotion above all the rest. And as he does, he reveals truths about animation that you had always felt but couldn't quite put into words.

He also shares a wealth of his own hard-earned tips and techniques, some about animating, but more on the art of storytelling and on how best to utilize the special properties that stopmotion alone has. It's not a book about "how to animate" but rather Why.... and he stresses the importance of playing to the particular strengths of our quirky art. If it can be done in live action or CGI or drawn animation, then why use stopmo? As many, he feels the sheer potential of stopmotion has only begun to be tapped, and he expounds at great length on how that might be done. And reading his words, it's difficult not to feel the same inspiration he obviously does.

Every animator should read this book.... even if you're just scooting Lego figures across the bedroom floor in front of your webcam (unless that's the extent of your ambition). He really illuminates the magic of stopmotion, what it does best and what it shouldn't be made to do. I just finished reading it for the first time, and I'm about to begin again.....

barry Purves is one of the best stop-motion animators there is right now, and even when the book is not a How-to of the stop-motion process is very onteresting and rewarding having barry's opinion and experiences in the craft. Thanks. Liked it very much.

She supports her analysis with theoretical and empirical arguments based on data from English, Italian, Chinese, and Romanian. Professor Giorgi addresses some difficult and longstanding issues in the analysis of temporal phenomena - including the Italian imperfect indicative, the properties of the so-called future-in-the-past, and the properties of Free Indirect Discourse - and shows that her framework can account elegantly for all of them. Awesome read!

This book was fantastic!!! Alta Hensley writes naughty sci-fi romance so well--and I just noticed this is book 1 in a series so, yay!!! Super excited it's going to be a series. The interactions between the hero and heroine gave me goosebumps and just wow, one of the hottest books I've read in a while. Couldn't put it down and I'm really looking forward to the next in this series. 5 stars!

What a hot story from Alta Hensley! I have always loved her books, but this story is definitely a bit darker... a bit more naughty with shades of non-con along with smoking hot punishment and sex scenes. There were times I wanted to smack Sparrow, our heroine, myself for some of the stunts she would pull, but I did empathize with her struggle to be free. Atlas was an awesome hero who knew exactly what she needed. I love that this is just book one in the series and I'll look forward to future installments in this world.

Sparrow is a slave on the run. She is in a galaxy where women are owned. Atlas is a huntsman. He is tired of this life and this is his last job before he retires. He is in a bad place. He needs to return her or he will be hunted down and killed. They spend time together and find they care for one another. But, Lark comes for her himself and takes her back. There is a HEA for now, but there is a lot of abuse in this book. Sparrow is not happy to be Lark’s slave. And, we are led to believe that most women are not happy with their lives. I am looking forward to the next book. I hope it will be more about Sparrow and Atlas and maybe changing the galaxy. I give this 4 stars.

I loved this book! It's really down to earth, easy to ready and easy to convert to action in my own business. It's a book that someone who is a budding business owner would find extremely valuable as well as a seasoned business owner. Overall, I found the book to be a very accurate portrayal of the
experiences that I have had in building my own company. Having
worked closely with Michael Walsh & Kaizen Consulting, I found
it interesting to see the concepts we have been working with for
several years presented in this book. While no single text can be a
complete resource, I am incredibly impressed with this collection of
business practices. A reader can expect to achieve piercing insight
